One Lucky Forum Member Found Out Why You Don’t Buy Cheap Parts

cheap parts

It’s very tempting to put cheap or inexpensive parts on an older Corvette, such as a C3. Need an alternator, a water pump, or spark plugs? You’ll find those at the local parts store, and they won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Of course there are some guys who go all-out with the performance parts. But if you use your Corvette as a fun weekend car, you should be aware of what you might get from your average parts store.

A C3 belonging to one of our members had a catastrophic failure of a brand new water pump, but luckily, it only occurred in his garage. Out on the road and he would have been left stranded. Luckily the water pump didn’t cause any collateral damage, but the lesson learned was found after reading the box. The part was made in China, which backs up the assumption that the water pump had a poor casting. Even if it is just a one-of-one occurrence, it seems worthwhile to invest in quality parts. After all, that’s what our supporting vendors are there for.
