Because the Hellcat is still a lumpy, heavy GT car, that’s why!

Today GM finally released the starting price of the brand-new Chevy Corvette Z06, and it’s actually fairly reasonable. For the low, low price of just $78,995 you could own the most powerful Corvette, which is also the most powerful GM car ever built! Now, I know what you are thinking: “Jonathon, that’s still a heck of a lot of money.” And you would be right, but by the numbers of other cars with similar horsepower, and similar performance stats, this car is an extreme bargain. Jalopnik loves to calculate the horsepower-to-dollar figure, and the Z06 came in at an impressive $123 per horsepower. That’s pretty good.

Pricing starts at the $78,995 point and only goes up from there, though. The convertible that you can’t take to the track, $83,995. Carbon Fiber pack, $2,995 extra. Z07 Performance Pack that includes upgraded carbon brakes and aero, a whole $7,995. The Performance Data recorder is extra, too.

So if you build the ultimate ‘Vette, you are still looking to be around the $90,000 mark, and that’s a heck of a lot, but if you could do with a bare-bones track star, then you really can’t beat this deal that Chevy has cooked up.

The Hellcat is a great GT car; it’s a stomping bit of fun, but it still really can’t go around corners. The Corvette Z06 will and still can be as much of a hoon as you want it to be, and with 650 hp, you can be a real hoon. We will have to see if the ZR1 will be able to top this if it ever comes out because it will have some pretty big shoes to fill.

If rumors are true and the ZR1 is going to be mid-engined, then it’s a whole different ballgame. As for right now, though, this is probably the best car per dollar if you want to destroy all the competition.
