Will the Corvette Z06 Get More Power Soon?

For awhile now the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has sat atop the GM performance tree. With 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, the Z06 is the most-powerful Corvette the company has ever made. But now we have learned that the newest Camaro will share the same engine — and power — as the Z06. Does that mean there’s a performance bump in the future?

While the CTS-V makes 640 horsepower with the same LT4 engine that’s in the Z06, reports are saying that the ZL1 will get the full 650 horsepower that the Corvette engine makes. That means there wouldn’t be a horsepower difference between the two cars, which might make some Corvette owners unhappy.

But as we all already know, horsepower isn’t the be-all and end-all in car performance. If that were the case, the Dodge Charger Hellcat would be eating supercars for breakfast on the country’s road courses. Well, it doesn’t.

Weight plays an important role in performance, and even if the ZL1 makes the same power it’s still a heavier car than the Corvette.

The bigger question is, will the Corvette soon get the 10-speed automatic transmission that the ZL1 will have?
