Story richard Truesdell / Images Richard Truesdell and Edward PeghinCorvettes and television go together like tea and honey, going all the way back to the Corvette’s inception in 1953, when both were in their infancy. To many, the connection reached its height with Route 66, which ran from 1960 to 1964 on the CBS network. Tod (Martin Milner) and Buz (George Maharis, whose character was later replaced by Linc, played by Glenn Corbett) took to the highway and the Corvette was forever linked to the Mother Road.
In the years since, Corvettes have starred in prominent roles in dozens of other TV programs, movies, and popular culture.
At the same time that Tod and Linc drove off into the sunset, there was a Corvette that was to become an icon of the marque, the Grand Sport. Developed by Zora Arkus-Dontov, it was a lightweight racing version of the Corvette whose styling mirrored the then-new C2 Sting Ray. Over the years, countless Grand Sport replicas and tributes have been built, some based on C2 Corvettes, others on custom frames.
But what if you could combine the styling cues of the original Grand Sport, but underpin it with the state-of-the-art chassis of a C6 Corvette? That question wasn’t lost on Dan Woods, host of the popular wrenching show Chop Cut Rebuild (CCR) that airs on the SPEED Channel along with Laurent and Mike Bensaid of Corvette Specialty of California (CSOC), located in Riverside, California.
Chop Cut Rebuild works on concurrent builds over the course of 13 episodes. In its seventh season in 2010, the CCR team worked on two start-to-finish build-ups. One was a 1969 Dodge Hemi Charger; the other was a Corvette Grand Sport tribute built on a contemporary C6 chassis.
The build was planned in late 2009 and early 2010 with the design and renderings – by CSOC’s in-house artist Gaston Gardeazabal – completed in mid-February, 2010. This would give the CSOC and CCR teams less than nine months to complete the car in time for its planned debut at the 2010 SEMA Show. Dan Woods is a very hands-on host, so he had the opportunity to do something that most of us can only dream of, cutting up and modifying the bodywork on a current-generation Corvette.
While the car would be fitted with an E-Force Edelbrock supercharger, many of the segments would be centered on the extensive modifications to the body. This presented a dilemma to Woods and series director Ed Peghin, who noted, “We quickly realized that documenting the Grand Sport, or GS as we called it, would be a challenge. How much entertainment could we extract from the build of a fiberglass vehicle? Designing a vehicle out of fiberglass is a laborious and painstaking process that does not make for exciting television once the viewer understands the process. How much filler, sanding, gluing, and more sanding, sanding, sanding can we show beyond one episode?”
Starting on the morning of March 18, 2010, Laurent attacked the C6 ’Vette like a man on a mission. Front bumper, rear bumper, rear fenders — all removed. The rear window, gone. The interior was stripped down to its barest essentials.
With the first segments in the can, it would be a month before the CCR team would return. When they did, the CSOC team had applied the fiberglass and filler to the rear and the seductive shape, with the split-window treatment, was taking shape. Dan Woods got an education in the art in applying fiberglass, which was chronicled in front of the CCR cameras.
As the bodywork progressed, maintaining a rigid schedule, attention turned to the mechanicals. In addition to the planned modifications under the hood, the GS was treated to a comprehensive suspension upgrade with components supplied by Pfadt Race Engineering in Salt Lake City, Utah. But there was a complication in the build process.
With winter moving into spring, the economy impacted the build. Mike and Laurent had to deal with several small family-owned suppliers going out of business, threatening to derail the build process. The solution was to purchase a second Corvette to install the mechanical upgrades while the body fabrication would proceed on the initial car.
Next, the CCR team visited the Edelbrock facility in Torrance, California, to detail the fabrication of the E-Force supercharger that would add 200 horsepower to GS. For the next episode, they returned the following week to CSOC with the hardware to document the installation of the E-Force supercharger on the second C6. This was followed by the installation of Baer brakes and Rated X wheels, designed by Jason Rushforth of Rushforth Wheels in Huntington Beach, California.
While the mechanical upgrades on car two kept the project on schedule, Laurent and Mike redesigned the Corvette’s stock interior. The interior received a complete facelift, with the stock trim replaced with leather and suede everywhere, in shades of black and gray accented with contrasting blue stitching. When the installation was complete, there was no low-rent vinyl to be seen anywhere in the cockpit.
Over the last two months, molds were produced so the rear-quarter, split-window treatment could be applied to the second C6. This was followed by painting, cutting, and buffing of the now-completed bodywork. Like many similar efforts, the design is polarizing with some loving it, while others have their reservations. One thing is certain: the craftsmanship is flawless, in a way that reflects well on everyone connected with the project.
Combining two generations of Corvettes into a single car is something that many have attempted. Getting the two generations to mesh perfectly is elusive, but not in this case as everyone connected with this ambitious build has something to be proud of.
The fact that every important step of the way was documented by the cameras of CCR (and is available for purchase as a DVD of the seventh season), make this a special treat for ’Vette fans.

InsideLine just pitted the rear-wheel-drive, manually shifted, 505-hp 2012 Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition against Nissan’s high-tech, twin-turbo, 545-hp 2013 Nissan GT-R Premium, and the results as were the same as they were during World War II. Score one for the good ol’ USA.

The Centennial Edition Z06 left the folks at InsideLine literally "wanting" the Corvette, thanks to its massive 7.0-liter engine, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, Magnetic Ride Control suspension, Performance Traction Management, and hold on to your rear ends, improved seats that actually rated higher than the Nissan’s. Then there was the sound coming from the Corvette’s two-mode muffler system that the testers called “one of the most sonorous delights you'll ever hear from a driver seat,” compared to the GT-R, “which sounds about as good as your wife’s Hoover.”

Not that the Nissan was a slouch, though.

For 2013, Nissan has made many improvements, including a 15hp increase courtesy of increased intake efficiency and larger ducting for the intercoolers.

You’ve got to pay for such performance, however. Once known for its value compared to other supercars, the Nissan GT-R listed for $97,820 and with its only option Super Silver paint went out the door at a cool $100,820. The Z06 started out as a relative bargain at only $76,500, but by the time some $25,260 in options was checked off, the final total was a whopping $101,760.

But once drivers got behind the wheel, these cars lived up to that money, proving to be “spectacular” on track and twisty back roads. Online.com says they’re better than they’ve ever been, but the Z06 is the more fun vehicle. The Corvette “not only rules the track, it makes driving to the grocery store exciting.” The Nissan, meanwhile, earned the respect of the testers, “but it only really becomes thrilling when being pushed at eight-tenths or higher, a realm we rarely find ourselves in.”

The 1961 Corvette Gulf Oil racer was considered the most dominant Corvette racer of its time, winning almost every race it was entered. One of two Corvettes delivered by Yenko Chevy to Grady Davis, the Gulf Corvette made its debut at the 1961 12 Hours of Sebring where it took third place in GT. During the 1961 campaign, Corvette racing specialist Dr. Dick Thompson (aka The Flying Dentist) took over for driver Don Yenko midway through the season and took home wins at Bridgehampton, Indianapolis, Thompson, Road America and Watkins Glen to bring cement the championship.

The former race car was discovered in 1990 and restored to its 1961 Sebring configuration by author and photographer Richard Prince. Since its return, the Gulf Oil Corvette was indicted into the Corvette Hall of Fame and the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame.

Saturday prior to the auction, the Corvette was on display out front of the auction hall and we caught up to the car just as a couple of the wranglers were getting ready to start it up and move it over to the staging lanes.

Early Corvette race cars seem to have their own distinct sound and as you can see, a huge crowd gathered around as the 283/315 hp fuelie was started up. Here’s a quick video from that moment:

Perhaps it’s only appropriate that a modern-day ZR1 Corvette engine would be placed in the original body style that started the ZR-1 (yes, with a hyphen back then) craze way back in 1970.

We first told you about this monster of a 1971 Corvette in July 2011, and now our friends at High Tech Corvette have put together a video that shows just what the modern LS9 ZR1 engine can do when planted in a 1971 Corvette. The LS9 even peeks out from under the hood through a clear opening that marks the C6 ZR1s.

Their testing shows modern-day special creation manages 536 horsepower and 480 ft-lbs of torque, way better than the original ZR-1 ever did. The owner also added modern ZR1 power seats and Bluetooth radio to increase creature comforts, which just goes to show you that in the 21st century, anything goes! Also upgraded, of course, to handle the added power were the brakes, suspension, and drivetrain.

By the way, the original ZR-1 was a $1,221 option package that added an LT-1 engine but also deleted such niceties as power windows, air conditioning, and a radio since this was, after all, a serious race car! Only 53 such cars were ever built from 1970 to 1972 since most folks didn't want to do without those things.

Josh Jacquot has the second best job in the automobile industry (Jim Mero rules!) as he gets to lay down the rubber for InsideLine.com’s Burnout Super Test. Last time we checked, the Corvette Z06 Carbon was the reigning champ, defeating a Viper SRT-10 by 50 feet. Josh brings back the new Corvette Z06 Centennial and decides to go head to head with another GM vehicle in the 500+ hp club, the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe.

So who’s got this? The 556-hp CTS-V Coupe has a 51 hp advantage but the Corvette is wearing the new Pilot Sport Cup tires and weighs nearly 1000 pounds less. We won’t spoil the fun so watch the video or hit the link for the full article.

We tuned in to Saturday evening’s live stream of the Russo and Steele auction to catch some of rare Corvettes that were offered for sale. This 1968 L88 Corvette Roadster was one of the major attractions at the Scottsdale auction and it sure didn’t disappoint, selling for a cool $625,000. With the 10% buyer’s commission, price out the door was $687,500.

Russo and Steele’s catalog description of the L88 Roadster called it the best documented L88 Roadster in existence. Of 216 L88 Corvettes made in 1968, just 20 were roadsters and only this L88 roadster is believed to have been ordered with two tops. Fully documented with just two owners in its history, the car underwent a restoration and was once featured on the cover of Corvette Fever.

Bidding on the rare Corvette opened at $200,000 and never stopped until the hammer fell at $625,000. Here is the video of the sale:

I have to admit that the Russo and Steele ring guys are a lot of fun to watch. They get pretty enthusiastic when the car sells. We’ll have a couple of more Russo and Steele Corvette auction videos coming up so stay tuned!

Over half a million bucks!
One of the great things about being a Corvette fanatic is that we definitely aren't alone. There are literally millions and millions of fans of this special Chevrolet creation that will celebrate its 60th year with the upcoming 2013 model. Many celebrities are included in the ranks of Corvette lovers, and the website L82corvette.tripod.com has even gone so far as to compile a list of past and present celebrity owners.

That list includes folks like Scott Altman, pilot of the Atlantis Space Shuttle, C4, and Alan Bean, Apollo 12 lunar module pilot, Riverside Gold 1969 Coupe;

Famous musicians are also included, including Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen (1985 Coupe), ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard (Rally Red 1967 Roadster), and singers David Cassidy (white 1990s C4), Sheryl Crow (Ruby Red 1993 Roadster), and Jon Bon Jovi (1958 and Red 1990s C4).

The list of actors features George Clooney (Metallic Blue 1986 Roadster), Farrah Fawcett (Black 1962 and 2002 Z06), James Garner (Black C4 roadster), and Burt Reynolds (Torch Red 2000).

You can see the long list of celebrity owners that L82corvette.tripod.com has compiled, and by the way, the website also points out that the L-82 made its debut in 1973 as the throttled down smog successor to the original LT-1 and bowed out in the 1980 model. With a 9.0:1 compression ratio, 2.02-inch intake/1.60-inch exhaust valves, and hydraulic lifters, it was rated at 250 net horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 285 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The L-82 has large port cylinder heads, pushrod guideplates, a long duration camshaft, a forged-steel crankshaft, moly rings, finned aluminum valve covers, a high capacity starter and a four-bolt block

Who is your favorite celebrity on this list?
With the introduction of the C7 Corvette coming next year, we’re assuming that the engineering members of the Corvette Team are hard at work with shaking down the new car in a variety of environments. Proving this are these spy photos from our friends at both Jalopnik and Autoblog, who captured two cloaked C7 Corvette prototypes playing in the snow at an unknown location.

While the Jalopniks are turning this into a victory lap following their much publicized 2014 Corvette ZR1 renderings with a “See, we were right”, Autoblog’s post was a little more instructive in pointing out the differences between the covered prototypes and the current C6 street car.

As we found with the previous mules, the C7 Corvettes pictured in the spy photos does appear to have a slightly longer wheelbase. Right off the bat, we see that the front grill opening doesn’t stretch as far across the front as the current C6, and it also appears to have a wider opening from top to bottom. On the rear, the four exhaust tips are close together in a row instead of the off-center style of the C6.

There is no mistaking that this is a Corvette when looking at the profile. Something is going on in the B-pillar area that seems to give the roofline a more tapered look and the rear deck does appear to be slightly higher but that could be due to the covering. Autoblog also points out that the rear view mirrors are a different design than the current model with the mirror area is more squared-off.

When we talk about German-based Corvette tuners, the name Geiger would usually come to mind. However, there are others in the land of Bavaria who also take pride in tuning America’s favorite sports car. One such firm is named TIKT and their awesome 758-horsepower Corvette ZR1 is called the Triple X.

Corvette aficionados are well aware that the standard Corvette ZR1 comes equipped with 638 horses from the supercharged 6.2L LS9. TIKT gets to 758 horsepower and 671 lb/ft of torque with a number of upgrades including modified cylinder heads, new camshafts, more powerful valve springs, modified compressor ratios, a larger throttle valve and a custom exhaust system. TIKT even adjusted the ZR1′s stock cooling system which they claim now pushes up to four times as much cooling fluid through the LS9.

The tuning firm also created a new aerodynamic body kit including a newly restyled front fascia to allow proper cooling of the radiator while creating down force at the same time. Also helping in the down force department are new side skirts and a carbon fiber rear wing.

TIKT also went to work on the Corvette ZR1′s suspension. The rear leaf springs were retained and new wheel mounts brought the vehicle about 30 millimeters closer to the ground without any real lowering. With the new race shocks, the Triple X was brought approximately 50 millimeters closer to the road and keeping the Corvette firmly gripped to the road are new Zerra Ultralight Evo 2 wheels.

Each January all eyes on the automotive world focus on the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. All the major carmakers roll out their latest creations and concepts for the world to see. This year General Motors created a whole new display to highlight their portfolio of products. We grabbed a couple of tickets to the ritzy charity preview event so we could check out all the good stuff before the show opened to the public.

The mood at this year's NAIAS was different than in recent years. The wondering and questions regarding survival were gone. The focus was once again on growth and new technologies.

Automotive enthusiasts filled the GM display throughout our visit. While the focus this year was on the launch of the new Sonic and Malibu, Chevy did bring 2 Corvettes to the 2012 NAIAS. Tucked away in a corner near a bright green ZL-1 Camaro were a Carlisle Blue Grand Sport Convertible and Centennial Edition ZR1. The $130,000 ZR1′s Carbon Flash paint sparkled wildly under the bright car show lights. The GS convertible featured the Heritage package, 6 speed, and Titanium two-tone interior. Spending time with these 2 cars made us yearn for the summer when we can get our Corvettes out of winter storage.

Adjacent to the Corvettes were the Code 130R and Tru 140S concepts both sporting their Corvette badges we told you about last week. We're still not quite sure that they're deserving the iconic crossed flags.

Here are our pictures from our trip to the North American International Auto Show. For those interested, it runs through January 22nd at Cobo Center in Motown.

Chevrolet’s fastest Corvette drop top, the new 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible, will be the talk of the internet today as it well should be. Somewhat buried in the press release is that the very first saleable Corvette 427 wearing what we assume will be VIN 001 is scheduled to be sold at Barrett-Jackson’s collector car auction in Scottsdale next weekend.

Interestingly, Chevrolet is teaming up with Hendrick Motorsports for the auction, which basically means is that Chevy is bringing the car to auction and Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick will probably be the one to take it home as he has often done with Chevy’s low vin and special edition charity auctions in the past.

The sale of the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible will happen at Barrett-Jackson on Saturday afternoon, January 21st at 2pm local time. The lot # for the new Corvette 427 is #3040 and the current auction description provides the following:

"A special Chevrolet model will be revealed during the auction where bidders have the opportunity to take home this one-of-a-kind vehicle. Proceeds to benefit AARP Drive for Hunger. Will be sold at approximately 2pm Saturday January 20, 2012.

Have you ever wanted to own a piece of history? This may be your chance. A special Chevrolet model will be revealed during the auction where bidders have the opportunity to take home this one-of-a-kind vehicle. **PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT AARP DIRVE FOR HUNGER** **WILL BE SOLD AT APPROXIMATELY 2PM SATURDAY JANUARY 21, 2012** "

In teaming up with Hendrick Motorsports for the auction, Chevrolet will donate the proceeds from the sale of the 427 Convertible to the AARP’s “Drive to End Hunger” initiative. The “Drive to End Hunger” is part of a multi-year sponsorship with Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet and it aims to address the growing problem of hunger among older Americans.

SPEED will be broadcasting the auction live on Saturday so make sure you set the DVR or tune in to see a preview of what the Corvette Team has been working on for the model’s upcoming 60th anniversary.

Andy BoligThe auction company is generously donating valuable auction time for the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation (CMCF) to auction a completely refurbished 1969 Riverside Gold Corvette Stingray coupe as lot #57 (charity lot 3001).For the third year in a row, the CMCF has been privileged to run a Corvette through the Barrett-Jackson auction. Over the past two years, the auction has raised almost $80,000 for the charity. The Foundation is hoping another bidder will generously step up and become a part of automotive history in purchasing the 1969 Stingray. All net proceeds from the auction of this Corvette will go toward amyloidosis research.
Chip Miller was co-founder of Corvettes at Carlisle and Carlisle Events in Pennsylvania. Chip was very well-known and loved in the Corvette community worldwide but in March 2004, he passed away from a little-known disease called amyloidosis. The Chip Miller Charitable Foundation (CMCF) was formed to help spread awareness of this disease and raise money for educational and research purposes.
The Foundation's goal is for earlier diagnosis to affect better treatment outcomes. If Chip and his doctors were aware of the symptoms of amyloidosis when they first presented, he might still be with us today. The mission of the CMCF is to empower people with the knowledge and understanding of amyloidosis for earlier detection, ensuring a better quality of life for those afflicted with the disease and to help science find the cures.
The 1969 Corvette Stingray is generously being donated for the third year in a row by San Diego Classic and Muscle Cars of Escondido CA. It is being offered at no reserve and is a rare, one-year color in Riverside Gold with a saddle interior. It features a matching numbers original 350ci V8 with an automatic transmission, fresh repaint, new interior, and brand new Firestone wide oval redline tires that are authentic to the car. The Corvette also includes:• Factory air-conditioning, power windows, steering and brakes, tilt and telescoping wheel• New bumpers, new emblems, new door handles and new rally wheel derby caps, big block hood• Owner’s books• VIN: 194379S715336
In addition to the new tires that were donated by Coker Tires, Reliable Carriers Inc. will ship the car at no cost to the buyer anywhere in the contiguous United States. So, that’s no auction fees courtesy of Barrett-Jackson and no shipping costs AND all the net proceeds go to an important cause – everyone should be bidding on this beautiful Corvette!
This refurbished like-new Corvette was made possible by our generous sponsors Mid America Motorworks and Trim Parts. The winning bidder will also receive a huge basket of car care items from Adam’s Polishes and the ultimate Corvette experience with four free passes each to the Bowling Green Assembly Plant and to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. Finally, the winner will be able to join us at Corvettes at Carlisle with their free fun field pass in August 2012 courtesy of Carlisle Events.
During the 2010 Auction, the “auction experience” featured the first-ever wedding at Barrett-Jackson (click here to read more). The newly married couple, Donna and Joe Miller (no relation to Chip Miller) drove the Corvette onto the block at auction time. “I’m not sure we can top that,” said Lance Miller, Chip’s son, “but we’re hoping three times is a charm to help us fight the terrible disease that took my father too soon.”
Tune in to Speed TV to watch the action - the car is lot number 57 (charity lot 3001) and is scheduled to roll across the block at approximately 7:00 pm Arizona time on January 17, 2012.

The Corvette also includes:
• Factory air-conditioning, power windows, steering and brakes, tilt and telescoping wheel
• New bumpers, new emblems, new door handles and new rally wheel derby caps, big block hood
• Owner’s books
• VIN: 194379S715336

During the 2010 Auction, the “auction experience” featured the first-ever wedding at Barrett-Jackson.

How much do you think it will fetch at auction? Kerbeck Corvette

Lot# 3040… It doesn’t sound like much but you never can tell.

While looking through the lists of cars going through the Barrett-Jackson auction next week, I saw a big Chevrolet Bowtie where there should be a picture of a car for Lot# 3040. This, of course, got my attention right away so I had to read further…

The auction description says:

“A special Chevrolet model will be revealed during the auction where bidders have the opportunity to take home this one-of-a-kind vehicle.

**PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT AARP DIRVE FOR HUNGER** **WILL BE SOLD AT APPROXIMATELY 2PM SATURDAY JANUARY 21, 2012** “

Chevrolet has had a history of auctioning off special cars at this auction for charity dating back to when, in 2008, they auctioned off the first 2009 Corvette ZR1 for $1,000,000 with the proceeds going to the United Way.

After that, they have auctioned off other cars including the first 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette Z06 and a 2012 Camaro ZL1.

So, that leads us to wonder what Chevy his hiding behind the curtain on Lot# 3040? While GM has remained mum on the topic, most people believe that the C7 Corvette will be introduced in 2014 and that 2013 will be the last year of the C6 generation.

While it’s much too early for Chevy to show anything on a new model that’s at least 2 years away we could be looking at a special edition Corvette. 2013 will mark the 60th Anniversary of the Corvette and many people are hoping to see a 60th Anniversary Edition, but again GM has been very tight lipped.

Of course, the rumor mills have been going strong about a Camaro ZL1 Convertible as well. Or, the mystery car may not be a Corvette or a Camaro. The much anticipated 2013 Malibu is getting ready to hit the dealer’s lot and could make a preview here. Or maybe they’ve got something brand new up their sleeves.

Whatever they are planning the one thing we can be sure of is that we won’t be disappointing. These charity auctions have raised a lot of money for some great causes and have featured some very special cars and we expect nothing less this time around!
