Can somebody tell me how to measure AN fitting sizes? I have a friend with an AN fitting at home, but he doesn't know what size it is. He needs an AN to 1/8" pipe adapter for his WWII jeep. So if I tell him to "grab a ruler and do this....." what would the "do this..." part be. :)

I'm interested in hearing about this but I would guess the AN sizes are in millimeters.

"16ths" so a -10 would be 10/16 or 5/8 and a -6 is 6/16 or 3/8 generally - numbers are even (4/6/8/10/12/16/20) BUT I have a -3 brakelines on my racer. Your best bet would be an Aeroquip catalog or a dealer because there is also the angle of the flare to think about. Perfomance AN fittings are 37degree who knows what they used in "the BIG one" WWll

Thanks, redvetracr. This might sound silly but where do you measure the 16ths from? Inner diameter of the line? Outer diameter?

Right now I am apt to tell him that he needs a -4 AN to 1/8 NPT from what you are telling me.

Scorp another thing to be aware of is not all brands of hoses and fittings are interchangeable. I learned this the hard way for instance say you have a fitting by Russel and buy a hose from Earls you would think that if they were both the same size like say -4 they would fit but they don't. The id is the same but the od on the hose is different. Just though I would give you a heads up on that I bought some hose once that I couldn't use. :seeya

Black Bart - That is true even within the same brand. Aeroquip in particular has several series of hose ends, each designed for a specific series of hose. They are not interchangable.

#4 - 9/16" wrench - 1/4" od tube
#6 - 11/16" wrench - 5/16" od tube
#8 - 15/16" wrench - 1/2" od tube
#10 - 1 1/16" wrench - 5/8" od tube

Don't kill me if the sizes are a little off. It's late, I have a few beers in me, and I'm working from memory. These are the most comon sizes I use at work on the airplanes. I also use these on my Vette. AN for aircraft does use a 37* flare. Trust me that an automotive 35* flare will seal just fine on aircraft fittings. I have them all over my Vette with no leaks.

8 AN turned out to be 14/16. Which led me to this page which has really easy to use pictures.
