do I need a puller to remove the steering wheel?
Got the center 3/4 inch bolt off but the wheel is still tight. Do I need a gear puller to get it off?

A gear puller will chew up the edge of the hub - you can get a steering wheel puller for less than ten bucks at any auto parts store, or they'll usually rent you one free.

They are fairly inexpensive, and you definately don't want to try to pull it without a puller - could break the wheel.

Why do you need a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel? It's only held on by 5 or 6 small phillips screws. Now if you are removing the hub yes you need a puller.. However why are you pulling the hub???? Dave

I am fairly confident the original poster can see the screws holding the wheel to the hub, since he has the horn button off - the fact that he took the big nut off tells me he is after the hub coming off. But what the heck, let him clarify for us . . . .

If you don't want to buy a puller, put your knee under one spoke and put pressure against the SPOKE. Grab the other SPOKE 180* off and pull up on it while you bang the bottom side of the SPOKE with a hard plastic mallet.
Doesn't always work but usually. DON'T pull on the RIM of the wheel.

Buy / Rent / Make a steering wheel puller. Easy to take off the hub with it. Frustration without it.
Besides, you will probably be in the column / turn signal area several times! Nature of the beast.
Would also help if you filled in your "Profile" area, and told us which Vette you are working on.

I learned the ***-U-me lesson the traditonal way - from a hard-nosed coach in 9th grade, in an after game team meeting where he was berating some player for his answer that included "well, I assumed Jack would blah blah blah with the ball". That triggered the ol "When you assume you make an *** out of . . . ." line!
Today, I probably use more of the lessons learned from that one coach (he was just right for that time in our lives) than all of what I learned in High School . . . which brings to mind another line: "when I look back on all the crap I learned in high school, . . . ."

Ah, the wisdom of high school football coaches. Some of the gems I heard along the way were:
- You may be little, but you're slow!
- (while watching game film of someone blocking me) - You're moving backwards so fast it's like you're on roller skates!
- (when someone ran around my end - I played OLB on defense) - Oh no! It's Katy bar the door time!
- (to encourage the O-line) Root, hog, or die!
- (While the coach was literally riding on the back of a guy whose last name was Mann, while he was doing "bear crawls" on all fours, during two-a-day August practices) - I want you to get so low you're eating dirt! You're a mole! You're a mole, Mann! (Henceforth Mann was always called "Mole-Man")
Then there was the coaching technique where our coach taught our field goal kicker to concentrate prior to the snap of the ball, by standing next to him with a brand new 16" "Clincher" softball (familiar to Chicago area folks), wrapped in a towel, that the coach swung like a club against the kicker's helmet. "Concentrate! (Thwap!) Concentrate! (Bonk!) Concentrate! (Blam!)"
(Coaches used to get away with a little more abuse back in the early 70's, compared to now.)
