Same as wmf62; disconnected everything column related, removed hood and gently removed up through hood opening.
No problems.

Year of car and column is important. 53-57 columns are longer than 58-62 columns.

I removed the original column from my 56 through the grill opening (with engine out) and replaced is with a column from a 60.

It was tight, and required a great deal of finesse.

The factory procedure was to drop the body on the chassis with the column already fed up into the dash.

When I pulled the column out of my '60, I found it very helpful to also remove the LH exhaust manifold. I gained a LOT of working room.

JV04 is right
the body drop was done with the column in place.
53-57 - the column is removed thru the grill opening - its not fun.

Removing the drivers seat will give you some breathing room so you don't have to worry about damaging the seat.

If you are working on a '56 or '57, the attached PDF based on a procedure presented by Jan Johansen of Copenhagen might be of help.

Be sure to remove the seat completely. Remove expansion tank and I've found it helps to disconnect the hood latch (hold up) so that you can swing the hood open a little more.
Didn't see it is for an earlier C-1. Mine, like Bill's is a '62

I am told that when you tilt it up, the gear box oil will run out of the tube. If you have the carpet in it, probably need to put a plastic bag over the end.
