Default Stereo change in 1988 Convertible

I would like to change out the stereo to a better sounding one in my 1988. The Bose system doesn't sound that good and just isn't cutting it at crusing speeds. I want to replace it with a unit that will look realitivly stock. i.e. black face, double din if possible. Also would change out the speakers as well. Any ideas on what brand to replace the stock setup with and at an affordable price?

Pioneer makes a nice Double Din. But if you are going to get a different head unit, you will either need to
A: Replace the speakers and do some wiring since the BOSE system has amps on each of the speakers. because the stock head is a dead head.

b: By a device that will let you use the Bose preamped speakers.

I believe that pre-90's are 1.5 DIN. Pioneer made (makes?) a decent unit that a lot of people put in their vettes. I put an Alpine single DIN in mine with 6x9s in the rear and 4" in the doors. It sounds OK but I'd put more power in it. With the top down, it's not quite enough

I would advise you to review the information in the audio section. Great area for this information.

Here is the link

Also review the C4 section on the sticky. Bogus did a great job on the set up and answers most questions.

my 86 is 1.5 din. the absolute BEST thing you can get if you can find it (imho) is a half din equalizer. Ive got a 5 channel that I like alot, and it allows you greater flexibility in choosing your head unit since you can fit a regular 1 din.

I have a pioneer CD header unit (head unit is AM/FM CD controller) with CD changer in the rear with Pioneer speakers with adapter (wiring) that came out of my 1989 Vette. I will TRADE EVEN the head unit, speakers, and changer for your stock Bose head and enclosures and amps.

email corvette95@charter.net if you are interested.
