The 10w6's have been around a lot longer than the 10w3's and actually the w6's are the subs that put JL Audio on the map. I personally have had the 10w6's in my past 4 cars and just recently put 2 of them in my C5 droptop and they sound awesome! If your looking for a little more bass I would go with the w6's but the w3's are also a excellent sub and alittle more affordable.

Is there much difference between the 10w6 and the 10w6v2? Their web site indicates the 10w6v2 is based on the "new design" of the w7 but - does it sound any better?

There will be a huge difference between the W6V2 and old W6. They V2 are not out yet, won't be till mid summer I hear. I have the W7 now and love them. Most of the V2 will be based on the W7 technology, they will not even be close to the old W6s.
