Default Vintage Radio Upgrade Help

Does anyone have personal experience (or know someone) who has had their original radio redone by one of these places that "upgrades" them to current day standards? I love my sound! And all of my cars have systems with nice sound systems. Plus, I'd like to keep the look of my original unit up front. I found a couple places that say they can make my unit what I want (FM, AUX input and front/rear/sub RCA outputs. For space savings purposes I'll most likely run a 5 channel amp to power the fronts, rears and sub. Just looking for someone with personal knowledge in this area to know if it "sounds" good? Or if these upgraded stock radios are just units that will accommodate those things but sound awful.
