Default 2004 C5 Coupe: Sub size, quantity and location

Hi All -

Starting to plan out the audio upgrade and would like some feedback from real-world experiences from those who have subs . . . in the C5 Coupe specifically.

What size, quantities and location are the sub(s) in your system? How is the sound profile, and would you go with another option if given the chance? Is there much of a difference in the audio perception with the targa off vs on? Also, what brand is currently excellent & affordable these days (been quite a few years since having a full after-market system)?

I'm looking at the following options as an indicator:

1. 2 x 8" compact/powered subs under/behind the seats
2. 1 x 10" in the rear center cubby with custom box
3. 2 x 10" in the rear side cubbies with custom boxes (vettenuts: http://www.vettenuts.net/index.php?l...t_detail&p=299)

Thank you for your input!

I have two in my coupe. They are the VetteNuts boxes w/10" JL10W3's. I have ran the center sub boxes as well. There is no comparison between the two. Our sub box sits up in the corner and with the acoustics of the coupe they sound awesome!

Thanks Marc! Any sound difference with the targa on vs stored in the back?

The sound difference with the top down is minimal.

Thats our stand up version and they look killer! Thanks for posting.

They hammer, too! Marc had me send a sub to him and they built the box custom for the sub. Very happy with the results. I can make the the car's rear view mirror that's stopped ahead of me vibrate.

Marc, I have a question for you or anyone else that wants to chime in. Currently the corner boxes just reside in the corner cubby holes and remain there by virtue of their weight alone. Do you think if they were anchored down somehow it would solidify the low end even more? I have been rattling that one around for a while now and am trying to decide whether to go through the extra work to do that, esp. since the low end from a typical Kid Rock tune goes right through me just as they are now.

I would try a thin foam material and wedge it in between the box and the storage compartment wall and that should take care of it.

With all the Raamat and sound deadening, I Had to push pretty hard to get mine to seat all the way down. Its really a snug fit

Marc's build quality is VERY good.

My subs sound amazing, and the base is more than I need, just threw my little 8 inchers!

Man, I love that look! It also doesn't take up as much space. And those 8's pound pretty hard??

Honestly, its MORE than enough. To the point it hurts my chest.

But then again, some guys arent happy with 800 hp cars LOL.

They are powered by a JL 900 hd amp.

I love my sound system, its perfect. AND standing outside the car, it doesnt sound like thos obnoxious ricer boys with the whole car rattling...

Heres a link to the write up I did of the whole install.

$400 investment. 136db max. Sound barrier to trunk. Less area to cool the cabin in the summer time. I still have enough trunk space for my golf clubs.

Two 10" JL Audio subs in a Subthump 1.42 cu. ft. box. 550watts at 2 ohms mono.

^I have those subs and grills. How did you attach the grills? I thought they went under the mounting rings but I don't thing the rings come off. If you just stick it on from the front it seems like the sharp edge of the grill would cut the speaker surround. It also seems like they would shake off that way.

I would appreciate any help because I want to keep crud out of my JL's.
Thanks.

The JL audio grills attach with a tight, press fit into a dedicated groove in the front of the subwoofer. Once I attempted to remove the grill by apply a strip of duck tape across the front and pulling it. The grille would not come off. I hate seeing subwoofers, even at competitions, with dented dust caps. They were $20 shipped.

Thank you.
I was just a little paranoid about pressing them in.
