I wanted to do something insane in the Vette so...:
I'm gonna put 2 18" woofers in the back of my car. This has cost me $30 in material so far from Home Depot. I know the box material isnt the best but this is more meant to play loud then it is to sound good. The 2 woofers are Electro-Voice pro audio woofers EVX-180B. These are the same woofers that would be found at a large scale concert, except they'd have about 200 woofers, not just 2. I had 2 SB180's sub boxes that I pulled them out of. The box is 7 cubic foot. Now added not in the pic are 3 4" ports. Using WinISD I tuned the box to about 40 hz. There will be a 32 hz subsonic filter and a 90 hz 24/db/oct Linkwitz-Riley crossover up top.
By their very nature PA 'subwoofers' do not play very low. So I purposely rolled the low end frequency off to try to compensate for the transfer function of the car (car boosts bass naturally as frequency gets lower). On my previous setup, as indicated on my RTA and ears, there was alot of energy at 50 hz and below but not much in the next octave, so even with heavy EQing I could not get the full "punchy" bass sound, but rather a "rumbly" sound. This time I'm trying to go for a very complete sound and hopefully this will do it. The 18" drivers can displace ALOT of air.
I tested out the enclosure in my garage using the car electronics and at first I was a little concerned about the output. It did not seem that loud, but then again with the box in the middle of the floor in the garage there wasnt much support from the walls and the garage has alot more air space then the family room or a car. Just to satisfy curiosity I put my previous 2 15" Kicker XPL woofers on the ground next to the EV setup and what I had aimed for showed thru, the EV's did not play as low but they had MUCH more energy in the upper bass octaves, so in the car it should work nicely.
The next test will be to get the beast in the car. Each woofer is about 25 lbs each and the box I estimated with bathroom scale to be about 80 lbs. I hope it wont slow my car down too much. Only trouble is I'm not sure if I can still mount the targa top.
