1959 Corvette Sting Ray
Does anyone have more links with pictures and info on the 1959 Sting Ray?
Does anyone know about the correct spelling? 1959 Stingray? Or is it Sting Ray?

Sting Ray.
Believe the Sting Ray nomenclature didn't come into use on prod'n
cars until later with the release of the redesigned 1963 model.
Might try posting in the C1 and C2 forums for more definitive answers.

Interesting, there is hardly anything about it in Leffingwell's "Corvette,
Fifty Years."
I only see one picture (pp 135) of Bill Mitchell driving it as his personal
vehicle in Detroit and only the photo comments as text on it.

I recall the shark-inspired Sting Ray design coming with the new 1963 model. When you find C2 enthusiasts in that forum, you may learn more than you ever wanted to know. What wonderful designs, but it was the performance and reliability breakthoughs of the C5 that finally inspired me to buy my first Vette.

One of the regulars on the C1-C2 forum was a GM engineer who still owns the 1963 coupe he bought in 1963.

The correct spelling for Bill Mitchell's racer is "Sting Ray". The car carried a sting ray emblem (animal with the name below) just aft the front wheel arc on both sides.
Karl Ludvigsen's Corvette, America's Star-Spangled Sport Car The Complete History has a complete chapter on the String Ray racer's development and racing exploits. The book is out of print, but used copies are available is you search the Internet.
GM applied the "Sting Ray" name to all 1963-1967 model year Corvettes modeled after Mitchell's racer. "Stingray" name was applied to all 1969-1977 model year Corvettes by GM after the 1968 model year Corvette skipped over the use of the "Sting Ray" moniker. This return to the name "Stingray" was largely due to the public's general association of the name "Sting Ray" with Corvette performance.
Hope this helps!
