Default tow hook?

just got a set of phoniex tow hooks. went to mount the rear hook and having issues. i removed the muffler hanger and sliped the hook holes through the studs. slid the muffler hanger back over on to the studs on top of the hook. the issue is there is not enought thread left on the stud to bolt on the nut.

do i need to replace the stud? they supplied 4 nuts, bolts and washers.

help!

I use the stock muffler hangers too, and the studs coming down weren't long enough. So I removed the entire rear facia, reached into the rear frame member, removed the stock stud bracket and mounted the Phoenix hook with two of the bolts they supplied. Reversed the process with the hook on the car, slipping it through the upper rear vent. If you mounted the front hook already then you will find the rear one easier.

That is why they supply 4 bolts - two for the front, two for the rear. The stock hanger studs are not long enough.

Use the bolts that Joe provided.

They didn't send me any bolts with my tow hooks. I ended up grinding the welded plate a little so it matched the curved part of the muffler mount. Then I had to grind the rubber(middle) of the muffler mount to get clearance for it to lay flat. It just barely fit. Then I had to put washers under the other muffler mount to keep the exhaust tips even.

The front wasn't much easier, drilling the mount, and drilling and tapping the frame. At least I didn't have to remove any body pieces. The whole job took about two hours.

I used the stock muffler hanger bolts and have about two threads passing the nut. I even bolted the E-brake assembly up to it on that side and the stud is one thread short of the nut. I think I only got and used bolts for the front hook. How thick is the muffler hanger? I didn't hang my mufflers there as they are different.

I don't know what your hanger looks like. You may need to use longer bolts.

didnt really want to rip apart the rear of the car. oh well!

Also does it matter if the tow hooks are mounted driver side or passanger side?

I bought front and rear tow eyes from Joe a few months back - came with bolts and directions. I installed them front on drivers side - rear on passenger side - "just cause" I guess.

You really need to remove the front and rear bumper covers/fascia to install correctly - keep in mind these will be used to pull a 3000# + car out of the sand. It is really not that bad and it made putting in the front DRM brake ducts a lot easier!

I also took the opportunity to remove the accumlated gravel from road use/off road excursions from the nooks and crannies exposed by this dissassembly...net weight loss I am sure...
