Peter Brock (Daytona Coupe) is gone in a fatal Rally crash
Peter Brock, the man credited with the design of the original Shelby
Daytona Coupe, the same one whom Superformance persuaded to update
the design for their current version and the one considered
by many to be a legendary race car driver was killed Sept 9th while
competing in a Daytona Coupe in a rally. He was 61.
Brock navigator tells of fatal crash
Correction - There are two Peter Brocks, the Australian driver Peter Brock has died.
The American desgner of the Daytona Coupe remains with us to the best of my
knowledge.

There will be a tribute at Bathurst tomorrow to honour Brock. He
won nine times there.
After the race, Brock's brother Phil will present the inaugural Peter
Brock Trophy to the winner.

Correction: the following remarks are about the American Peter Brock.
Besides the Daytona Coupe, Peter (Pete) Brock also gained fame
as the man behind BRE - Brock Racing Enterprises.
BRE developed and campaigned Datsun 510's that were simply
outstanding in their performance and appearance. I remember
poring over articles about these cars - they were and remain
very desirable for me. They heavily influenced a generation or
more of SCCA racers and street car owners.
Pete Brock's "Screaming Yellow Zonker"
Morton Drives Legendary 1971 BRE Datsun 510 To Class Victory at Monterey Historics
Anyone use Tilton parts?. Mac Tilton worked for Peter Brock
before opening his Tilton manufacturing operation.

different people then as one will have died at the wheel of a car
designed by the other. A tragedy, whatever the circumstances.
Thanks for the alert - I will look further to clarify.

Joemoia is correct, they are different men.

Brock was driving a Brock Coupe, a road-going evolution of the
1964 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe race car. Brock Coupes are
built by Hi-Tech for Superformance International under license from
Carroll Shelby. The original car and the replica were both designed by
the well-known American engineer who happens to share Peter Brock’s
name.
Sorry. I regret how my mix-up distracts from the sadness of this loss.1964 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe race car. Brock Coupes are

"Because, oddly, there are two racing Peter Brocks.
Australia's Peter Brock is certainly familiar to serious American race fans, though his main exposure to our market was a very effective series of Mobil 1 oil commercials years ago that featured Brock -- a lean, silver-haired man who spoke with great authority and presence. He was so effective that the series of commercials he did in Australia were simply aired here, but Mobil never identified the speaker as Australia's greatest racer.
I wrote about racing's other Peter Brock -- America's Peter Brock -- in 2004. In 1963, he designed and built the first Shelby Daytona Coupe for automotive legend Carroll Shelby. Brock did many other impressive things automotive -- he helped design the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, he was the head of BRE, a company that in the 1970s brought Datsun into the racing world, and he has become an accomplished writer and photographer. But it was his design of that Shelby Daytona Coupe that guarantees him a place in the history books. It was the first American car to win the FIA World GT championship.
Several years ago, the American Peter Brock became part of a project to build and sell a replica of that Shelby Daytona. It's called the Superformance Brock Coupe and was built in South Africa. It's an excellent car, looking very much like the original Shelby Daytona, with comparable performance.
Confusing? Yes, but it gets more so. The Australian Peter Brock was killed while driving a car that some news accounts referred to as a "Shelby Daytona." Yes, it was, coincidentally, a replica of the American Peter Brock's original car. However, it was not the Superformance version built in South Africa, but a look-alike product built in Australia."

Yes, the American Peter Brock is still alive and well, spoke with him at Petit Le Mans.
I was shocked when I first saw the headlines as well, and though it is no less tragic for those that know the Brock that died, I have to say I was relieved to find out it was not the Peter I know.
