Default Oil cooler product review

Would anyone, with experience with engine oil coolers, like to look at this Canton oil cooler product and comment on it? At $295 it is half the price of others.

Looks good, but I'm holding off to get one with a remote filter mount to get the filter away from the cat on that side. That cooler is the right type to get, plate.

This setup is risky. The oil filter will stick down very low and would be subject to getting knocked off if the car ran over something. You would want the spin on adapter that fits on the oil filter base but has no provision for an oil filter below it. The filter would be fitted remotely with the hoses running from the adapter to the filter and then to the cooler.

Or you could get the adapter block that attaches to the oil temp sender location just above the filter and run the hoses from there and you could keep the stock filter.

1. Unless you're running a track only car, you need to run an oil thermostat. Mine is a 180 degree unit I got from Jegs. This will add restrictions to the system, but it's a necessary evil to keep from killing the engine with too cold oil. Even coolers integrated into the radiator have this problem, but to a lesser extent.

2. IMO a 20K BTU cooler is too small. I'm running a 45K BTU system in an otherwise stock car, and I'm seeing oil temps up around 250-260 on a hot day after PCA Time Trials (slower than a track, but 4-5 continuous laps around a cone course). Plate or tube technology can be debated, but size needs to be bigger.

3. Ditto on the comments on the adapter plate. The LSx engines have a built-in oil adapter plate, right above the filter. Adapters aren't the cheapest (Mine was about $170), but in the overall picture it's not that big a player.

My total out of pocket expense came up to around $500, a couple of years ago. Here's an install guide I put together:

HTH, and have a good one,

The oil filter setup is not right.
The lines will be too short, we use about 12 feet.
The straight fittings are going to be hard to work with.

PS Canton does build good products-parts and peices.

DRM has been flawless. I was having oil temps of 305 before and now it never goes above 275. I have been off track on a few occasions without any problems as the lines/cooler do not hang down.

Is there room to mount a fan-assisted cooler in a C5?

The one above is a plate & fin design. It has AN8 fittings and comes
with AN8 to 1/2" hose barbs. Size: 10 x 13 x 4

The fan is a 400 CFM - 8 inch Tornado unit. It is operated by an
thermal switch in a fitting that you mount in the line.

Something like this might increase the options for mounting location
and keep the radiator inlet unobstructed. The fan would provide
cooling even at low speeds.

DRM here also. While not a bolt-in on for a C4, well worth the extra effort! I also made a manual by-pass valve so I can leave it off for street driving.

Works perfect!

Isn't 12' of hose a lot to push the oil through? Pressure or volumn drop?

I have the DRM oil cooler setup also. I would also agree that it works very well. I've seen maybe 275deg in session when outdoor temps are in the high 90s. The rest of the time I'm running 245-265deg.

While their kit is more expensive than the Canton one. The lines are the correct length with the fittings attached. You really do want 90-deg fittings on both ends. Their adapter goes above the oil filter where the temp sensor goes. Nicely machined peice of aluminum with o-rings. No leaks and installed fine the first time. The lines run clear and high up so they won't catch under the car. I've already done an off track excursion to test it They also use a Setrab oil cooler which is a very nice peice.

Oh and on the oil pressure question. My oil pressure drop from using this kit is minor. I still have plenty of pressure on the street and on the track. The lines are fat with AN-10 fittings.

I do cover mine on the street in cooler weather so that the oil temps get warm enough.

Yes 12 feet of hose is a long push. But a good running LS motor shouldn't have any problems at. Maybe 1-4 psi, but if you look at what the pressure is with oil over 300 vs 265 you will see benfits!

Volumn isn't a huge issue because the lines should be filled when you check the oil.

Randy
PS if you are building a motor with extra clearances on the bearings. Shim the pump!!!
