Default Our World Challenge Laguna Results

Car #2 Boos Performance. This was both the car's and John's first pro race. After qualifying 27th, we ended up 19th. The brake pedal kept going soft possibly due to the floating rotors backing away from the brake pistons during cornering. Several teams said they've experienced that problem and now use a spring of some kind to keep that from happening. John thinks with brakes he might have been several cars further up the ranks, but without reliable brakes he couldn't pass people by late braking into the turns. He battled with his second cousin in a Blackdog Racing car for a dozen laps before finally passing him. The Horton Viper that finished one spot below us is from West Coast Vipers. They gave us a hard time for using a pickup and trailer to bring the car to the track rather than owning a semi transporter (we didn't have a pit box either).

Kevin Chambers who runs a C5 Z06 WC car offered lots of help and even had his girlfriend pull out some backup calipers from his shop and have them ready when we drove to his house north of Monterey. He said he knew we were at Road America and didn't get in the race and he was going to do his best to see that we make this race.

Great to hear - sorry I didn't see you all while we were there. You should really come by and talk to Lou and the team; I'm sure they would welcome you by!

Kevin is top notch. I met him for the first time and will continue to root for him as well as LG's cars! Kevin had a great race, but lost his right rear wheel on turn one. It was absolutely amazing to see him continue to drive the car despite the injury! He won a nice fuel prize over all!!

I enjoyed meeting him and Wendel (who I believe is his dad!!)

JK
ps - glad to hear you beat out the fancy-pant's viper with a grassroot's racing setup!!

We had a lot of fun running the race and hope to do it a couple of more times next year. That's about where the budget would end.

Tom, nice talking to you and thanks for stopping by and shooting the Corvette breeze. Kevin, it was great to meet you and your driving was really impressive in a little old C5 Z06, especially after it was damaged.

Great to hear a grassroots effort, so to speak, I am sure the grass is still pretty deep - did so well. It is also great to see competitors working hard to keep everybody in the game

At the end of the race or season it is nice to still have friends

At the regional level I see a lot of "rivals" busting their azz on their friends cars.

I hope to catch a race in person where you guys are running next year.

Ron,
Good to see you guys again! Sorry I had to leave early Sunday, I did not see the race. I am sure when you guys get things sorted out on the new beast, you will do awsome! Stay in touch!

Aaron, it was a good race and we are ok with where we finished given the brake issues and our inexperience. It was nice seeing you again and sorry you had to leave early. Race is on Speed next Sat. at 1:00 pm central.

Did y'all check the wheel bearings/hub assemblies? If piston knockback gets that bad it could be a hub bearing assembly problem. I know because that's happend to my Z06.

Congratulations on a job well done. Guys like you who run at basically the grassroots level make all of Vette guys proud.

One thing to watch for on the bearing is the flange that bolts to the spindle. The bearing will never feel loose since it won't be, but the flange developes a crack behind the hub that allows the bearing assembly/hub to be out of vertical plumb, making the rotor knock back the pistons when the car enters a turn and stress is put on the hub. It happend on my car this spring and there have been a couple of others reported here that did the same thing, and piston knockback is the first indication. I've got some pictures I can post if I can find them.

That probably isn't what your problem is, but it might be worth checking, because it's certainly dangerous.

Keep in mind it was John's first time at the track and the car's first race. We ran 133s qualifying and his last lap in the race.
