Race Seat Install
I'm installing a Ultra Shield road race seat and a 4pt cage in a 02 Z. The upper part of the seat will be supported to the cage which is a 4-6 inches behind the seat.
I'm soliciting solutions for the design of the attachment. The attachment needs to be easily reconfigured to seat adjustments (for different drivers). The attachment should not stab through the seat in a crash, should be very light and reasonably strong.
I'm thinking of heim joints with threaded rods between the seat and the roll bar forming a trapazoid, wide at the roll bar and narrow at the seat. but that might be overly complicated and might not adjust enough. There should be several inches of adjustment possible.
What have you all done?
Dan

I'm considering something like this for mine:

I'm trying to decide between fixed and adjustable, though.
I'd reinforce the mounting plate to avoid the whole 'pole through the back of your head' thing.

The IO Port one is nearly identical to my Frey Racing one in my RX7.

IOPORT works great although I have never crashed with it. Got it LAPD I had to bend it slightly to match the Kirkey seat which is no biggie.

I'm also concerned that the seat back support attaches to the 4pt. roll cage whereas the seat is attached to the floor. Ideally, seats should be attached to the roll cage, as you know, so that in a crash the seat moves with the roll cage, rather than having the cage pushed into the seat and driver.
I'm thinking about attaching the seat back to the rear bulkhead or just not attaching the seat back at all to anything. This is not for race spec. just track days.
Any comments?

Seat back braces aren't required on some FIA approved seats. Also, the braces are fairly new in the grand scheme of things -- of course, so is the HANS. As for seat mounting, you'll find that non-tube frame cars will rarely mount the seat to anything but the floor. It'd take a hell of an impact to move the cage a significant distance without moving that same piece of floor...

I mounted my spec miata seat to the floor pan and my seat back brace to the roll bar with no issues. I've seen a few of these set ups crash tested as well.
Seat back braces should be used with an FIA seat regardless. Just put it up to the back of the seat if you don't want to drill it.
I don't believe an Ultrashield is an FIA Seat.

Tony
