Default Hey guys w/ oil coolers... brienf "LOW OIL PRESSURE" at start today.

Well the car sat outside overnight and this morning it was about 40 degrees (the coldest I've started it snice the oil cooler install).

When I started the can I got the "LOW OIL PRESSURE" message for a split second... but before I could do anything the pressure had gone to 40 psi where it's supposed to be.

I've noticed w/ the cooler in place it builds pressure a hair slower at startup... but after that it performs flawlessly w/o issue.

So... I'm guessing the little blip was a function of the colder thicker oil

haven't seen it myself - what weight oil do you have in there? i actually just pulled mine last night for the winter - just doesn't heat up with the external cooler on there.

I have 5w40 amsoil. Can't pull mine I have the Dewitt's w/ left side (hot side) integrated 7 plate coler.

Works great... keeps temps under 260 at the track, but still gets the oil up to temp when cold.

I think it was the split-second that the pump had to fill the lines up w/ the thicker oil (thicker as in colder.. still a 5 wt oil when cold)... the pressure sensor probably saw a lower value, threw the message, then it instantly went away.

Don't they recommend 5W 30?

I have noticed that also after my car sits for extended periods. I was thinking of doing an Accusump anyway.

Yes... most many track hounds (you should know this Jody) run a little thicker oil so that it sticks to parts better when hot. Many run 15w50 at the track.

I started using mobil-1 0w40 (black top) and switched to amsoil 5w40. It should maintain great cold flow characteristics, but stay a little thicker when heated at the track.

Accusump. Have oil pressure before you start the car. Prevent potential pressure drops due to high-g pickup issues on sticky tires.

Hmmm.... well it doesn't really worry me. The car performed flawlessly at VIR and oil pressure always stayed at 40 psi or above even as the temps rose.

Don't the Vette coolers have a vernitherm valve or are they just a straight shot?

The valve should stay closed until xx temp and short the cooler.

Brian,

Mine used to do it all the time when I had the LPE cooler on if I had not started it in a while. Not an issue unless it doesn't build pressure in a timely fashion. Sometimes it happened so quickly I barely had time to realize the DIC had flashed a Low pressure warning.

I figured it out tonight... If I simply hop in and start the car then it's fine... the guages do their sweep then pickup the appropriate readings then are fine.

The low pressure warning happens only when I turn the key on and let the guages do their sweep. Then, when I start the car and it has a tiny lag before reading pressure, it pops the error message.

Brian,
I don't remember seeing that warning, but my car has had an accusump for so long that it may have happened. Now with the accusump I flick it on before starting the motor and always get to watch oil pressure climb before turning the motor over.
