C4 - Power steering problem at high RPMs
I know it is a well known fact that the C4 power steering system is not the greatest. My 1996 GS came with a cooler, but I know it still gets plenty warm. I also get a bit of blow by out the resevoir cap when on the track.
However I am starting to notice that I have to wrestle the wheel a lot more in tight corners while at high RPMs on road course. I run 315's all around...
What is the solution for this and having better steering imput at all RPMs? Does someone make a better pump?

My pump was replaced under warranty after the second track event. Tight corners at GingerMan would cause it to loose pressure.
Everything was fine for 3 seasons and then it started popping hoses and steel lines. I suspect it was sucking air at high RPM and the pump was cavitating. Sold car to a waxer and he has no problems since (on street).

You should also get the braided steel line for the high pressure line from the pump. Mine cracked twice at the fitting. DRM sells it but you have to call and ask as it's not on the web site anymore.

We installed a front mounted cooler after we pulled the a/c and it seems to be better than what it was previous. It was just a cookie cutter trans cooler out of summit.

I am using synthetic. Last flush wasn't very long ago as I blew a power steering hose on the track less than a 1000 miles back!

First I need to ask you a question, does the power steering pump run off the back side of the belt? This will help me verify the type of pump you have. My guess is that it is a reverse rotation pump. If so, we will have to rebuild yours. The cost for this is $100, plus the cost of any parts that need to be replaced.
Thanks for your inquiry,
Jeff

Not at home so I will have to look at the pump, but sounds like it has to be sent in.

The first hose to pop was at Grattan (shortly after that photo was taken), then Blackhawk, GingerMan and finally early Saturday morning at Road America. The RA event was a 2 day, so that was the straw that broke the camels back.

I have the turn 1 pump. it's perfectly streeable, but it does groan at times at low rpms, not too bad though.
for the track it's perfect.
my fluid used to boil, foam, whine.
.... no more.

Lee Mfg pump rebuild
This topic has been discussed endlessly, but I cannot find the old posts. Did the forum erase old info?
Anyway, I rebuilt my LT4 pump at Lee Mfg 818-768-0371 Sun Valley, CA.
with a lower voulme gerotor. This solved the overheat problem.

Using Lee mineral fluid also helps.
The LT4 has the smallest pulley, no underdrive possible.
Be sure to mention that the pump is reverse rotation.....
