Default Source for used race slicks ("scrubs")?

I've heard that there are sources that sell slightly used road race tires (called "scrubs' I believe???) from race teams who use them for several heat cycles and them pull them off.

Does anyone know where to buy these? . . . Stock C5 sizes.

Thanks!

no one will run stock C5 sizes in slicks.

few memebers here sell them and Pheonix a vendor here look down in the threads as it was recently posted. There used to be GY's but noow Hoosier took over the DP series and they would rather chop them up so it killed the source for many tires.

How about Z06 sizes?

I talked to a fellow Corvette owner (an older guy in a very fast EB Z06 - from Carson City I think???) at a track event at Reno-Fernley. He sent me the name of someone he buys them from, but I can't find the info.

There are several places to get them from. Here is one that has served me well in the past. He is in WI.

I will normally have several sets of the Kumho V710 (275 x17 and 315 x 17) during the year. They go fast though - literally and figuratively.

Try to find some local racers. Shipping will eat up a lot of the value.

Still an excellent value. Generally $75-80 a tire, plus say $50 shipping. That's $400 a set and you generally get two or three or perhaps four weekends, if you run super hard?

I bought my first set of scrubs from John Berget a couple months ago. He recommended I change my wheels to 18's all around (18x9.5 fronts & 18x10.5 rears), because it is much easier to get scrubs in those sizes. So I did, then I ordered four tires from him. All four tires cost me $355 including shipping to L.A., CA. He ships COD, so you don't have to pay for them if you don't like the way they look when they arrive. Best purchase I ever made for my track car!

Joe at Pheonix Performance always has some good deals. I use 315s on all four corners so I can rotate and I like the extra bite up front!

I'm confused.

If a tire was worn/hard enough for the original owner to no longer want to run them, why would someone else want to buy/use them????

Are used-up race tires that much better than good street tires???
Is the buying/shipping/mounting/balancing of used race tires for one or two events dollar-wise over buying new race tires and using them for 5-6 events???
Where does the dollar/mile ratio advantage lie?

I'm asking.....

DOT race tires for example Hoosier, Khumo are good for about 6 heat cycles. Top teams will replace them with less then 6 cycles. Even at 6 heat cycles the DOT race tires are still good for track days (HPDE's) & are far superior to street tires. At 6 heat cycles I wouldn't race on them as their performance is dropping off, however for HPDE's they are fine. $1,000 plus for a set vs a few hundred for scrubs some scrubs have only one or 2 heat cycles. For HPDE's go with the scrubs. The tires Joe has at Phoenix are nice & worth it

some race slicks are 400-500 or more Then we buy then for 50-100 each People racing need to win by 1 foot as at a HPDE it doesn't matter. I ran some dried up crack slicks and the were still good enough to hold off all but two fast cars with more power. They olny last 2-3 days but they stick great. Always wanted to try a brand new set of GY but at 2,000 bucks +

Most of the scrubs I have purchased have perhaps 70-80% of the original tread depth. If you are running the same size tire on all 4 corners, with careful rotation you are likely to get 4 track DAYS out of them. I also do another trick with them and that is to apply Traction V compound(per the directions) prior to track use. This does increase their speed and further extends their life by reducing wheelspin(from greater traction.) Just like the others have said, these are much cheaper than new rubber(R compound or street) and superior to street tires. You also get to try a variety of different tires brands as well. Another source is Bob Chick at (843)762-7324, who had Hoosier GAC's last year.

Dave, If you find somebody who is willing to ship, I always could use track tires as well. We might be able to get a group deal on shipping or something.

Bobby Archer Motorsports sells Hoosier VLR scrubbs. I purchase the 305-30-18 and run them on all 4 corners of my C4 with factory rear Z06 wheels. The tires work great & I have run 4 - 5 events on a set. He charges $50.00 per tire. If you live in DFW area, you can drop by the shop & pick out your own tires!
