Default Full Gas Tank?

I'm planning on doing a few track days next summer and am new to this. How much gas do most of you run with? My son says he and his friends try to run with 1/4 tank, since there is a gas station only blocks away.

I usually start the day with a full tank, and try to keep my eye on the fuel gauge and/or DIC, so the tank doesn't get too low. You will be making a lot of trips to the gas station, if you start with only 1/4 tank. The car gets between 8 and 9 MPG, when running it full tilt.

I think you're thinking of dragracing. If you're talking about tracking, a full tank is the only way to start. Starting with 1/4 tank, you'll be pulling off the track after every 5 or 6 laps to go to that gas station.

A full tank might last one day (if your not on it hard)

Not only that, the fuel will slide away from the pick up in the tank, and momentery fuel starvation, sputter, will happen on some corners.

A least 3/4 tank, but best to start the day with full tank, then when it gets down to 1/4 tank, fill it up again.

Depending on how you drive, figure 7-8 miles to the gallon for being new to track weekends or HPDEs. Later on when you get more experience, if you get more then 4 mpg your not going hard enough.

Heavy right foot and WOT tend make the fuel gage drop quickly.

With time and experience those numbers will go down.

Good Luck and have fun

figure 5 gallons per 30 min of drive sesson. 30 min session, plus ideal before in hot pits and cool down after,

When I started out I use a full tank plus 5 gallon jug. That left me with 1/8 tank at the end of each day.

Plus, too and also, if you're running in a NASA event and you run out of gas on course, you're excluded from the track for the rest of the day.

Plan accordingly!

I get about this MPG also...@ RA I can run 8 laps in a 20 min. session X 4 that's 128 miles. With an 18 gallon tank you will only make it 102 miles.

I bring a 5 gallon dump can with me so I can make it without leaving the track for fuel.

@ 8 lbs/ gallon a full tank is only 144 lbs., so weight is not much of an issue but smooth driving is.

Yep, hardly anyone knows that, but it's in the CCR's (Page 30, Sec 6.5).

Whether they'd enforce it or not, who knows. You can bet if it was at the National Championships or for a regional championship, they'd probably call it. (TT)

I don't know about C6's but the C5's give you plenty of warning with the starvation problems at less than a 1/4 tank. There's no excuse to run out of gas on the track. I've run it pretty low and all you have to do is slow down and still have plenty left to go to the gas station.

Gary, just to keep the record straight, gasoline is about 6.5 lbs/gal. Water is 8 lbs/gal.

If you are auto-X or track racing a C4, better fill it up. At about 1/2 tank full on hard corners she will starve for fuel.

We are going to Mid America in Iowa, lots of open space and no walls! Just for fun.

Plus with the big wide tank on a C4 fuel slosh during autocrossing can upset the car.
