Close, aggressive racing. When they showed telemetry, I was
watching shift points and didn't notice speeds, but Sandown
has to be a fast track with that big front straight.

Looked like drivers shift at 6300-6600 and run up to 7100
briefly in top gear just before braking at a few locations.

I wonder what the deal was with the numerous reports of
steering problems at both events. Conditions were overcast
in both cases and there were showers at Sandown - couldn't
have been as hot as other places they race.

Only saw one team with respirators for the guys changing the
pads. Nasty job, IMO.

Yeah the racing is fantastic. Extremely competitive and the drivers and allowed to be a bit aggressive. Not sure what they are allowed as far as engine RPM but they so sound like they run em up a bit.

The Holdens use the HMS engine, a 5.0 litre (305.118 ci) V8 (which
I believe is based on the LSx series.) Some details:
  • These are limited to 7,500 RPM.
  • Maximum compression is 10.0:1
  • The bore size must be 101.473mm (3.995") or greater
  • The fitment of sleeves to the cylinders is permitted
  • The nominal section of each cylinder must be circular (Honda Rule)
  • The minimum deck height of all Ford and Holden Motorsport Cylinder blocks is 207.0mm.
I'd need to go back and confirm that the telemetry I was referring
to was a Holden car but in the Sandown event, the vehicle spent
the majority of its pace within 4,500-6,500. When it dipped to 4,000
or less, it regained RPM sluggishly. The driver infrequently took it to
7,000 and I saw 7,100 momentarily a few times.

If my math is correct, a 3.995" bore requires a 3.0426" stroke
to achieve 5.0 L displacement. (It looks as though the rules permit
a larger bore, hence reduced stroke, but I'll stick to 3.0426")

In a recent thread: Advice on care of racemotor, piston
speeds of various engines was reviewed. Based on the calculations above,
the V8 Supercars are limited to speeds of 3,800 FPM (7,500 RPM). The
telemetry I observed showed the driver keeping speeds down to
3,200-3,350 FPM (6,300-6,600 RPM) for the most part, with brief periods
at 3,600 FPM (7,100 RPM).

Assuming, of course that the team hadn't fiddled with their telemetry
to skew the values reported.

Here is a link to parts of the V8 Supercar 2006 Operations Manual

It is an 11 pg PDF with some interesting technical details/requirements.
