Default Anyone recognize this race car?

This is a long shot, since it has Porsche badges on it, but I wonder if anyone can confirm what it is. This was taken around 1971 at Mid America Raceway, Wentzville.

The guy who took the shot is not sure if it really is a Porsche or simply a Porsche powered sports racer of some sorts. I figure any racers from back then may have a chance to recognize it.

There is some writing on the car I can't make out. I can send you a much larger picture in email if you want with much better detail, about 7 Mb, but that was too big to post here.

Front looks like a Porsche 907, circa 1968. But the 907's
I find photos of are coupes, not spyders.

Porsche had an open seater in 1969. I can't be sure but it might have been called a 917. I saw them race at the 6 Hours of Endurance at Watkins Glen in 1969. The next day they competed against the CanAm cars but were no match for the Chevy Big Block powered McClarens.

Here is a 906E coupe from 1966. Said to be the last 906 built.

Notice the similar placement of the fuel filler on the back of the right
front fender, the openings in the lower front valance and hood

This is a 907K from 1968. Front has changed, if
your car is a Porsche 907, it seems to be an earlier one than this.

Bill, I believe you are thinking about the 917. Predates the 917-30
that Mssrs Penske and Donohue used to dominate CAN-AM.

From here
"The Porsche 910 or Carrera 10 was a race car from Porsche, based upon
the Porsche 906. 15 were produced and entered in 1966 and 1967.

The main difference to the 906 is the use of 13 inch wheels and tyres
as in F1, plus a single central nut instead of the 5 nuts as in a road
car. This made the car not suitable for street use, but it saved time in
pitstops. Overall, the 910 was lighter and shorter than the 906.

The Porsche 910 was entered in mid 1966, starting with the hillclimb
from Sierre to Crans-Montana in Switzerland. As engines, either the
reliable 2000cc 6-cylinder with 200 hp or the 2200cc 8-cylinder with
up to 270 hp were used

In hillclimbing, the career of the short and light open-top 910 "Bergspyder"
version with its 8-cylinder continued, winning the 1967 and 1968
European championships. At the hillclimb of Ollon-Villars, which counted
towards the World Sportscar Championship in 1967, the 910 even
scored a 1-2, with Gerhard Mitter and Rolf Stommelen beating Herbert
Müller and his big V12-Ferrari P."

I concur. I bellieve your car is a Bergspyder (open hillclimb racecar).

Little success coming up with any more images

It looks like Bob Gelber might be a resource. From the bottom here
"My old Porsche 910 Bergspyder (mountain racer), named for
that race, almost won it in the sixties, before the race on public
roads was banned for being too dangerous. That was when my
car was a factory entry owned by Porsche".
bobgelber@aol.com

Cars 006 and 016 were converted to Spyders. 006 was later restored to a coupe
configuration - car #39. Might be a coincidence but here is a 910 Coupe with #40

Yes, it is an earlier Bergspyder.

I had a friend in Florida, Burt Norris who had one of the later 8 cyl 910's. His started life as a coupe, was run for years in South America as an open car and he restored it to a coupe body. The front fenders of the later cars were more rounded, more like the one in the museum photo above and like the 908's. The earlier cars were more like the Carrera 6 (906) bodywork that this car has. The front "dive planes" were probably added later in the life of the car, I haven't seen any pictures of them with that style of front dive planes before...

Thanks, guys, it does seem to be a 910 with either an early 906 style nose or a nose from a 906.

The guy who took the picture didn't know and needed it for a club newsletter. We are getting a laugh that a Porsche club had to come to the Corvette guys to find out what the car was.

If only transaxles weren't so expensive, I'd build something like that to play with. Chevy powered, of course.

I kept waiting for the 'That's a Windigo Flyer, a replicar my cousin
built out of my aunt's old VW Beetle. He put Webers on a Scat intake.
It really flew..." post.

Surprising that, in a time when pictures of just about anything can
be brought up with just a few clicks, a Bergspyder is so elusive.
Considering the low production numbers and the hazards of hillclimbing,
if the blue #40 is still around it must be somewhat valuable.

What's funny to at least me, is that I opened this post and immediately said, hey, that's the M.A.R. false grid. I grew up at that place from the early 70's until the new now no longer Gateway road course was built in '83 or so was it. We raced there as well starting in the late 70's I guess it was in GProd.

I have no idea what kind of car it is suffice to say a Porsche based on the emblem.

Default I remember

When I raced SCCA & IMSA in the early 70's. That car was regularly at SE Events. It was a old (relatiely) Porsche 906 with a moderenized front nose. I believe it was out of Atlanta Ga, Just can't quite remember who's it was. The 906 was a factory racecar withe the 6cyl 911 based engine. Needless to say, They are very lightweight (= fast)
