History of Trans-Am on Speed Fri

The great line is one of the racers at the end who acknowledged that
when they 'needed a win' that maybe it wasn't just the 302 and as he
passed Donahue's Camaro with ease at the end on the straight that the
other racer looks over with that 'yes, you guys figured it out!' look.
Great program.

Once GM releases the new Camaro and Dodge releases the new Challenger, I'd love to see another Trans Am created. Not like it was in its latest iteration, but more like it was in the beginning when the cars at least resembled a real production car. Kind of like what Speed World Challenge is only with Pony cars instead of all the makes that they have.

Actually, it wasn't a bad show , but there were a lot of mistakes made. They showed a lot of Shelby GT 350 footage which is odd as they were not eligible for TransAm. GT350's were B Production cars and were classified as two seaters to race against Corvettes. Only Mustang Sedans were in TransAm in 66-68 because you had to have four seats in the car to be allowed in. That is why the 16 Mustangs made for the 66 season did not have Shelby's name on them or Shelby serial numbers even though they were basically GT350R models with sedan bodies... Good show, just misleading I think, and makes you wonder about the accuracy of the rest of it..
Still worth watching though
How do I know this stuff? Everyone needs more than one toy to play with...

are you aware alot of that footage is fairly current?? like some of the Sebring stuff and the "in car" from Road America...if you watch it again look for a little white tag on the dash of one of the cars, it`s a SVRA medallion.....

I understand completely that it is new footage, the point is that it is the wrong footage old chap. There is a huge TransAm group on the west coast that gets about 40-45 entries at its events, all of which are original 35 year old racers, why not film that instead of some rag tag race at Elkhart? Just an observation... They showed at least 4 different GT350 cars in the first few minutes including some modified modern engine in one of them - it means that they know very little about the subject I think...

I watched it the other night also, interesting. Acid bathe the car to make it lighter, unfortunatley after a couple of laps, you see the track through the floor boards

Trans Am resulted in some great prod cars.
Who'd a thunk a destroked 327 would scream?
Well tuned 68-69 Zs were killer on the street - especially with 4.56 - 4.88 gears.
And they sounded so sweet at 7500-8000.
.......jeez that's almost 40 years ago...............
God Bless Mark Donahue.

As reported from my SCCA RE just back from nat. convention.
SCCA pro will restart TRANS AM in 2009 with the origional format pony cars(Mustang,Camaro,Challenger) seems that the big three really want this. I'm saving my beans to step in. How about You?
Too bad We will not see an AMC in the mix.

What's the chance that the new footage of other than Trans-Am cars
is really just a current vintage class with mixed entries? Some of the
Sears Point footage looked old but most of it was the current expansion.
It was great in any case, for those of us with less history.

I did see the American Muscle Car episode on the AAR Cuda and Challenger T/A a while back when Sam Posey was talking about acid dipping the cars. He said that one time during an inspection an official leaned on the car with his elbow and dented the car. He said, "boys, I think we have a problem".

For those that don't know there is a modern day series similar to the old trans am. It's sanctioned by NASA and called American Iron. I've been a part of it since it started. Plan to come back stronger than ever this season with a new car I built essentially from the ground up.

SVRA does make provisions for and accept cars "prepared as" for a specific series rules. A "replica" could run in the appropriate class.
On my car IMSA rules required the original frame, so they acid dipped it, eating away approximately 30% of it and then built an alloy tubular cage/frame and attached it to the original frame.
I was told that everyone pushed the envelope on the few rules they had.
