Default Do I need a trans cooler?

I got a transmission high temp warning this week-end at Phoenix International Raceway. I've heard Amsoil or Redline might cure it, but should I consider a trans cooler? If so, which one and how much?
Cheers from Arizona

I don't think the C4's have tranny temp warnings. However, the fluid is not a bad idea. Personally, I use Mobil 1 automatic synthetic. I installed the engine oil/tranny coolers last summer. My temps are down and I have not seen the tranny warning again.

No matter what fluid you run, a tranny cooler is a good idea!!!!! The harder you start pushing the car, the more you'll see those warnings. It helps to shift very smoothly, but it still gets smokin hot. A good estimate is around $1K installed for the kit...maybe a bit more or less, but that's close...and well worth the money!

>20min sessions yes, <20min no. Use

Pro-Blend ATF additive (water wetter for ATF) and good fluid.

I have an '02 Z06 and started having the same issue of the light coming on and having to slow on the track. It would typically come on after about 15 minutes on track near the end. My understanding is that most of the heat is generated by the diff and that heat transfers, so I just had the Doug Rippie diff cooler installed. Unfortunately I won't be giving it a test run until about a month, so I personally can't give you any feedback yet about how well it works. I may still need the tranny cooler too.

Good luck!

Default Thanks for the feedback.

I drove the car yesterday after it sat overnight. It was a little hard to engage 1st and a little slow into 2nd. I also noticed a very slight whine in 2nd.

I don't have a lift, so I'm giving it to Xtreme Motorsports for diagnosis
and, hopefully, a fix.

I'm thinking I may actually have two problems. Tired trans fluid, and a slight leak in the diff.

Cheers from Arizona.

Down there in the heat of summer you will for sure need a cooler setup. In the winter time you could get away with running a couple cool down laps in the middle of your run (not fun at all). Keeping your drivetrain cool will safe $$$ in the long run.
