Default More on track tires

It's a consideration to use a set of used OEMs on the track as they can be had relatively cheap compared to 18 CCWs and the like.

The issue is tires, so excluding Hoosiers, which I don't think last long enough to be economical, and since there are not any R compounds (like RA-1s) in 19" what high end street tires would be best to run on the track using the OEM wheels?

I'm not looking to win a race here, just to have some affordable safe fun on track days.

you might look into Nitto's or BF Goodrich. They have 19" sizes and have descent bite.

you could get a set of c5 z06 wheels and have 17's up front with 18's in back.

or you could track down a set of GS wheels. repro's will be pretty cheap. This will get you the best selection of tires.

I think ccw's will be cheap in comparison to burning up 19" tires.

How about buying C5Z06 rear wheels for the track? You could still run your OEM fronts if you need 18s to clear your brakes.

The Nitto NT01's or DRII's are a pretty good compromise on stock rims - I get about six to eight hours out of a set and they are fairly fast. If I were to start buying rims again, though, I'd probably get a set or two of GS 17 x 11's, since you can buy used scrubs with a lot of tread for pretty cheap.

Last year I used a set of GY (Z51) supercar tires. For me they were fine although I sure a more agressive tire would offer up more and these tires can be found on here (take offs) often at prices much less than new.

Still haven't figured out which tires to use on stock rims. Hard choice.

Might look at buying a set of repro 17" tires [10" and 11"], tires cheaper. Wheels should only run $400 or so.

Good Luck!

I just jumped on a set of GM 17x11 oem GS wheels w/ V710's... opens up a whole world of cheap track tires.

I'm going with OEM style C5 Z06 wheels, 18x9.5 front, 18x10.5 rear. They are readily available in the aftermarket, a "beefy" design, will clear Stoptech brakes, and are under $600 for a set of 4.

^ You sure they'll clear stoptechs? I know they'll clear the wilwook SL6R caliper.

well, if he's got 18's up front (repros) they should clear.

i need to get a set of willwoods. buying pads every 2 weekends is ridiculous.

I've used OEM 18's and aftermarket 18's on Stoptechs before, mostly as rain wheels. I can't say I used every aftermarket suppliers wheel, but I'm pretty confident they all should clear.

Again, this is 18x9.5 NOT 17x9.5.

the 18x9.5" Z06 motorsports I've got needed a 1/2" spacer to clear the wilwoods

Yep... that's because the repro wheels have fatter spokes. David are you running larger stoptech calipers too? I thought the issue was with the width, but I don't have firsthand experince like you.

David,

So are you saying that if I run the stock C5Z06 rear wheels on all four corners, 18x10.5's, then I can run StopTech ST60 front and ST40 rear BBK without spacers?

Dan

I'm saying that in my experience, you can run the ST40's. I've never run the ST60's, but generally, 6-piston calipers have more clearance than 4-piston (smaller pistons).

In ALL cases however, you should download the brake template before purchasing.

BRIAN, do you have the black motorsports now??? That is what I was going to run, and it would be great if you could TEMPLATE them with the Stoptechs for us. If there is an issue, I'd rather know before buying the wheels. I don't have wheels, brakes, suspension, cage, tires or anything else yet for THIS car, I'm just working from my prior cars.

^ Nope... I have CCW streets, stock oem '01 Z wheels w/ used street tires for track rain duty, and the GS wheels I just bought for track use.

Ryan (Oyishdog) used to have the repro Z06 wheels on his C5Z but he only had stock brakes. Sorry I can't help more.

You guys have run (or are planning to run) the after market, repro motorsports wheels on the track ???

No problems with strength, or the weight of these wheels ???
