Default High Performance Driving Event @ VIR

Just curious about the National Corvette Museum High Performance
Driving Event at Virginia International Raceway this coming July 2nd.
and 3rd. I signed up for it and this will be my first HPDE. Anyone
else out there planning on attending and what kind of preperation
are you doing for your Vette, other than the required DOT 4 Brake
fluid. Anyone else done these type of events before and what can
I expect? I need to aquire a helmet yet. I know a full face helmet
would be better but I'm leaning toward an open face helmet, it will
be hot in July in southern Virginia.

Glad your coming to the event. You will have a great time.

With all the students, instructors and spectators we expect close to 200 corvettes at the event.

Here is the event web page:

Plus I am finishing up a handy "Check List & TO DO List" for items to be done before each run session.

For ppl looking to purchase helmets, please look at the SNELL SA 2005 rated helmets.

Looking forward to meeting everyone

Change your brake fluid. Don't need much else for the car though you should thouroughly check it out yourself or have a mechanic do it depending on how "involved" you are with your car. Open vs closed not going to help you in the heat and it will be HOT. Bring a cooler with lots of drinks.

Not an inclusive list, but other things to bring (space dependant): sunscreen, light weight long sleeve shirt and light weight pants if you have them, shorts to swap into between runs (I'm assuming the club requires long pants), socket for your lug nuts, breaker bar and torque wrench (others will have them but if you have one bring it along), numbers for car (duct tape works fine and you can also use it or painters tape to protect vulnerable areas of paint etc.), ez up tent for shade, chair, window cleaner & paper towels, general tool box just in case, extra quart or two of oil, extra brake fluid (they sell this at the store there for a reasonble price), advil, hat, sunglasses, mechanix gloves, tip for your instructor (only kidding).....

You may consider getting race pads for your brakes too. Depending on how hard you are braking you can chew through the stocks pads REAL FAST....trust me on that.

Being his first HPDE, the stock pads should do him fine.

I'm far from being an expert so you may be right, I know the OEM's are up to snuff in stopping the car but I found them not to be very durable in repeated abuse.

I am no expert either, nor am I an advanced HPDE driver. However I ran my first set of stock pads for 6 weekends. I guess I am light footed on the brakes. So I figured unless I really suck a first timer should be fine.

I have read many other guys burning them up in a day. I would guess they are driving much harder than I and maybe on a track that is tougher on brakes.

VIR is easy on brakes, especially in the beginner group. You'll LOVE VIR and the NCM event. I'll be instructing, as are tons of over extremely skilled track junkies, so just relax, and come out for some fun!

Thanks for all the input from everyone. I only have about 1700 miles
on my 06 Z06, so it's barely broke in and there's over three months to
go. The brake pads are still like new. I will probably run the stock pads,
but I may bring along a spare set of pads just in case. Everyone
is giving some good info on things to bring along etc. Again appreciate
all the inputs, anymore ideas are welcome.

as Long as you have more then 50% of the pads remaining thats fine. Bring some new ones too. There will be plenty of ppl to help you change if you need too. Rember, NO OEM TYPE CERAMIC PADS, They are just plane dont stop well from speed.

Just put in fresh DOT 4 brake fluid with a few weeks prior to the event.
