Default RA-1's for AX?

I'd like to get some better rubber for AX, but can't swing a new set of A6's or Kumhos at the moment. I've been using the stock runflats on my C6, and they're not very sticky. I'm looking at purchasing a set of scrub Toyos. The set of four would cost me less than a single new A6.

The tires will be mounted on some Ace Slick Z06 knock-offs, 18X9.5 front, 18X11 rear. I'm looking at 275/35 fronts and either 305/35 or 335/30 rears. Which rear size is the better choice?

Can anyone offer advice?

RA1's are better than street tires, but not as sticky as the Hoosier or Kumho. The best part is RA1's last forever, and are good right down to the cord. You are giving up some time to cars on real R's, but definately a good choice to continue improving your driving.

I would imagine the 305's will fit better. 335's are pinched even on 11" rims.

Excellent, that is what I wanted to hear. Since I have to drive ~15 miles to the local venue, I thought this would be a great way to get on something stickier without killing them prematurely.

I'd love to hear any additional feedback or advice others may have.

Thanks!

For tires you want to be able to drive to the event on, I've used RA-1s and V700 Victoracers. The RA-1s don't have the grip the V700s have, when the Victos are fresh. As Mojave mentioned, the RA-1s grip is pretty consistent until the bitter end, while the V700s will grip really well for about the first half of their life, then start degrading and are actually worse than the RA-1s with about a third of the rubber still remaining.

If you can get a good deal on the RA-1s, you won't be disappointed. I'm running 275/315 (on 17" wheels), and have a bit of understeer. 275/305s work really well; I'm running those on stock wagon wheels.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

All I can add is that a set of RA1s with 700 miles on them will be stickier than a brand new set. They get stickier as they wear, to a point, of course.

Scrubs are definitely a good deal, unless the tread is completely obliterated.
