Scott Gillen, the cigar behind 'Build or Bust' has a new show

As of Dec, the named changed to 'Setup'. It is due to air on
SPEED Wednesday's at 8:00 PM - the first show starts on April 18th.

This show has been in the works for 12 months, it will take 10 drivers from all walk's of life and put them into the race car that they help build. Shows about building as well as driving are some of the most popular shows out.
The Next American Racer is unique in that it combines elements of these two wildly popular American past-times -- professional racing and car modifying. In The Next American Racer the drivers are intrinsically involved in the process of building their cars, knowing the time spent in the factory will have a direct correlation to the performance on the track. The drivers in this show will have serious discussions and debates with the factory engineers and crews and other racing industry professionals. These dramatic moments will really bring in the average racing fan, who would never otherwise get the chance to see this process close-up. Racing fans will be driven to watch the car customization and building process, knowing that the same cars will be put on the track for real soon after. Viewers can sit in their living rooms and feel like they are part of the process to select The Next American Racer. The show will be set on a road race corse, this is much different than you usual suspect. The drivers will race a real speeds, go into and win or lose in a real race. The fact that our drivers will take part in there own building of the car, sets the limits higher. Our drivers will be young, and both female and male.
We will pick twenty of the country’s best up-and-coming racers, let them build their own Pontiac Solstice, pit them against each other in thirteen weeks of time trial races and hand the winner a coveted spot on a prestigious nationally-sponsored racing team? The Next American Racer, which will test the skills, endurance, resiliency, perseverance and gut instincts of future racing stars. From the beginning of the series, where the drivers are chosen, to the several weeks they spend in our own race center learning how to build and set up their own personal race car, to the weeks of racing against each other on a real track under real race conditions, these drivers will have to fight every day for one coveted spot on a national racing team. The Next American Racer shows what it really takes to get to the top of this highly competitive world while finding a driver to watch on the American racing circuit......Thats all I got for today.....if you think you have what it takes to try out for the show, come on down...I will post the try out dates in a few weeks..........

raced at Willow Springs.
In the entry Gillen says

Calling Danny Popp! Could you take 4 weeks off? I am brain storming. You or I have never held a pro licence and we could try this. Nothing to lose.
Of course, you know way more about set-ups than I do. I think a RAFT sticker would look good on national television.
I have a sister in-law that lives in LA for free housing. We can go to Wal-Mart and stock up on peanut butter and jelly. I could cash in my Kumho air miles for free plane tickets for 3 people. I have free Hertz rental days to use up.
Tell me what your thinking Mr. RAFT. Or you can say, what are you thinking you nim rod.

It looks like a fun show with some close quarters racing. The track clips are from Horse Thief Mile at Willow Springs. It is an ultra-tight track with the most severe elevation changes I have ever experienced on track. There is one spot you just don't want to go off-track or you are literally over an edge and down a big embankment at the fastest part of the track. In a Corvette that can be 100 MPH.
The track is narrow, so bumping in corners is almost inevitable....

Anyone watch it yet? I just watched it and by the time I could get to the computer to post about it, I realized that I forgotten the name of the show. They should've gone with "The Next American Racer" instead because this name is very forgettable.
Anyway.. It looks like they have yet another "Jace" in the cast on this show. I can't believe it. I really don't have much else to say about the show at this point other than this would be a really cool opportunity to have.

At first
shot of Jr. spiking a SoBe in the trash can after the segment where the SoBe No Fear
sponsors chose TK/TJ instead of the kid?
.
Naw, we don't want your money. We are going to hold out for
someone national with whom we can continue a long-term relationship.
Then latersomeone national with whom we can continue a long-term relationship.
Hey, wait. I've got tattoos (pants around ankles)
Son and father appear to be quite the pair. Am I mistaken, or was there a quickshot of Jr. spiking a SoBe in the trash can after the segment where the SoBe No Fear
sponsors chose TK/TJ instead of the kid?

I just about fell off the couch. My 17 year old son couldn't believe it either.
TK's response to them at the end of the show was pretty good too (I'm paraphrasing here): "You've been breathing a bit too much of your own air".
I think this is going to be better than the Forza show, starting off with even baselines, then see what the teams can do.
Have a good one,
Mike

Can't believe that guy and his dad turned down the sponsor..
If they are that good, why are they on the show anyway? You'd think they'd have some BIG sponsor and would be racing already....
Fools....

I'm glad Tommy Kendall is the host.
BTW- What did the one driver get booted for?

First, Lose the matched set of ear rings. If I were a potential sponsor, I would never sign a kid with matching onyx ear rings, or tattoos etc.
Sponsors want someone to represent them as well as win races.
These drivers have an opportunity of a life time. Some of them are going to be severely dissapointed when their self image clashes with reality.
I think this show has the potential to be a great show. There is a no bull attitude and they seem to be letting the results speak for the drivers, not what is good for TV.
Tommy Kendall is a Former Factory Chevy driver who lost about 2" from each of his legs in a crash at Watkins Glen in the GTP Chevy Intrepid. He adds credibility.
All the cars start as equal. The drivers all think that they are the best, and with anything in life, there is a pecking order that WILL be set based upon the performance of their "Package".
And their package includes the driver, car, team and marketing savy.
I am looking forward to watching the whole show.

I agree that the kid is a total idiot for turning down RMR. National? Hasn't he or his father ever heard of the Millen name? If anything, they are international because they are Kiwi's from NZ. And btw.. What about RMR's sponsors that could jump on board at any time like Pontiac or Red Bull? This kid and his father just amaze me.

Unlike everyone else, his crew chief and mechanic were AWOL when cars
and garage slots were assigned. This raised eyebrows but was allowed
to pass.
The axe fell the following morning. At a driver's meeting, Tommy Kendall
directed everyone's attention to someone locking this team's toolbox.
Then he announced that the crew chief had failed to attend a 6:45 AM
safety meeting. With that, the guy and his CC were sent packing.
Next contestant, please...
