C4 Vette goes off course, causes at least $20,000 in damages.

Tha was a SCCA event at Portland International Raceway. The area was the South Paddock and it's not really that large to get up any real speed but it looks like total carnage.

I know a couple of the people wh ran that day and they are familiar with the paddock area.

I just can't believe that cars were parked so close to the course.

Reads to me like the C4 owner was driving his buddy's Porsche during a fun run.

Quote from page 2

I was watching the second group from that morning session and i saw a few cars almost run the end cones over. Plus from what I hear, the driver took out all the finish line cones in his Vette before he got into the Porsche.

+1. Vette driver couldn't handle the P-car.

That's typical for any autoX event at PIR.

It was a SCCA sanctioned event. The host track was PIR or Portland International Raceway. They always try to squeeze more course size and shrink the parking area. Every AutoX event I have been to out there is like that.

Yeah I saw the carnage. It was pretty bad. I don't understand why people are allowed to park that close to the track. I parked WAY away.... not because there weren't any spots... but because it seemed dumb to park anywhere near the course let alone at the exit....

I have never raced with them, but i agree, the few times I've been out to watch I've been very uncomfortable with the layout. Too many obsitcles on the course and the course often comes back towards the parking and or staging area.

Alledgedly (though I haven't been able to substantiate it) the saftey stewards car was one of the ones hit.

Just glad everyone was ok.

In the above link it shows the stewards car and he posts in response to a few people, I think it was page 3.

I used to live and race up there. The area is not that large. I remember once at the any of the auto-x course someones throttle got stuck and went into a crowd of people barely missing everyone and the cars parked in the grid. Scared me half to death as I was in grid!

Here's a video of the finish with another car. How this happened is a mystery.

That is the REVISED end. After the crash they chnaged it. If you pause it at 16 seconds you can see the carnage in the background. The finish used to run parallel to the the white trailer, before it though, and you can see the P-car facing the left.

Of course they're going to put the blame on the Corvette and it's driver instead of the course layout/parking

Well technically, everybody else was able to negotiate the course with out an incident.

In VA we've found that plastic barrels with that flag ribbon stuff doesn't make a substantial barrier between the course and parking/staging cause it does not slow a car down much
