Default Cheap Paint protection for HPDEs

I ran 10 sessions at CMP this weekend and I applied cheap clear shelf paper from Walmart $6.00 a roll one roll of the wide does the whole car. I did the front both rocker panels and the rear area around the brake duct, also the door sills on each door to keep them from being scratched when getting in and out. Left on for three days and very little adhesive and little that there was came right of with lighter fluid or alcohol (not the drinkable kind) Here are some pictures. JD

Con-tac paper is a wonderful thing. I'm not a paint protection junkee, but it is great (in solid colors) for temporary numbers etc.

I need to dig my roll of clear out, as your post reminds me it would be hand to have at the track just in case.

Works like a charm. Put a coat of the quick detail wax on first. Then when you put it on try and get as much of the air bubbles out of it. All those glue marks are where the air bubbles were. I made some cardboard templates for the areas I want to cover. Just cut out all the pieces ahead of time and stick them in place.

I know, I know, a bit over the top. The waxer in me refuses to let the track junkie in me go out and completely mess the car up

Grahm-
Just park next to Butt Ugly next time and we can work out those residual waxer impulses.

I found the clear Wal Mart shelf paper trick several years ago, and it does work great!

There are two different types of clear shelf paper you can get: one is translucent, and one is transparent. I've used both, and the translucent film left more glue behind than the transparent film.

But, both were great at protection.

Have a good one,
Mike

That's pretty cool. Did the contact paper completely prevent rock chips in the areas covered?

Contact paper and painters tape do not *completely* eliminate rock chips. There is always a bigger rock But it is a lot better than doing nothing at all. I use a bra on the nose and mirrors. You should see the nose bra after 12 events. It is a mess.

The contact paper comes out cheaper in cost than rolls of blue painters tape. Takes less time to cover more area. Especially if you made some cardboard templates to precut all your shelf liner ahead of time :o

The worst area is the nose and hood (about half way up). That's from all the cars in front of you. All the stuff on the sides you do to yourself. The poor windshield is just a sacrificial lamb...

Not a chance Wally! You and Jerry will start to give me all sorts of bad ideas. Just like the rest of the BPKMS gang. It's a constant struggle between the waxer/racer in me, but the medication is helping

I'll see you at RR in June

Understood. Sounds like it does a good job with small stones and general grit while being a lot less objectionable than painter's tape. Thanks for the info!

You may want to try Clear Spray Bra also. Sold by http://www.protint.com/

I used it this last weekend and it worked extremely well.

Looks like elmer's glue wet. Dries clear. Peels off in one piece just like celephane. No chips at all. It worked great around the brake duct. It takes a little extra effort to remove for the black duct.
I used the Speed Lingerie Bra for the nose. Shelf paper over the headlights and under the edge of the bra.

Nothing will stop 100% of possible damage unless you stay home.

But a combination of items and a little effort sure helps a bunch.

This issue never bothered me when I had a $30k car, but it is freaking me out with a $70k car. I am going to Walmart today.

GREAT POST! Best forum on the planet.

The Carpet Protector from Home Depo and the like does the same thing. It is $14/roll. Has a light tach, streaches for a tight fit and it leaves no residu when removed. Works well.
