Default Please - first-hand experience only - C6 Z51 brakes w/ C5 Z06 wheels

I've seen a few threads on this, but no definitive "yes, it works, I've done it".

I'm upgrading the front brakes to C6 Z51 sizes (two-piece – probably Stoptech or Racing Brake), have 18" fronts for the street but want to re-use my Z06 rims for track days..

I'm also adding extended ducting / hoses.

I know most will offer "you don't need to change the front rotor size". I'm fairly educated on what works and why. My specific question is "will a stock Z06 front wheel fit w/ a relocated stock caliper via a C6 Z51 bracket"?

Thanks in advance.

Good question. I too would like to know the answer.

Am I correct in assuming all you need to upgrade from C5 Z06 brakes to C6 Z51 brakes is new caliper brackets (abutments) and new rotors?

My first hand experience is that there is at most 1/2'' clearance between the caliper and rim on my C6 w/ Z51.

That's with your 18" rims.. A 17" rim would be 1/2" difference in diameter. It's close, very close. I remember a post where someone sad they did this upgrade w/ stock wheels, but that may have been non-Z06 wheels, and I'd like a definitive answer before I purchase parts.

Actually, a precise measurement from the center of the hub to the outer edge of the caliper on a C6 w/ Z51 brakes would work as well.

Search for threads where Rudy Arais (sp?) comments on using the C6 Z51 brakes. I'm pretty sure he's running stock 17/18 Z06 rims on his C5Z. Although he does use some other caliper, maybe?

It's difficult get an accurate reading with the wheel on, but I measured 7.5'' (no 1/16ths) from center to caliper edge. Rim to rotor clearance is 1.5'', and 0.5'' to the caliper. (good guess huh?)

I forget, are the Z51s 13'' rotors? If so, that agrees exactly with my measurements.

C6 Z51s are 14 inch rotors Vs the 12.9 of the C5s.

I just remembered that I have another set of rotors laying around. They're between 13 5/16'' and 13 3/8''.

That makes my earlier measurement pretty worthless then. If it does work, it'll be a VERY tight fit.

Edit: Bill, I just checked the Chevy website. 14'' is for the Z06.

C5 Z06 rotors and C6 stock rotors are 12.75" Diameter.
C6 Z51 rotors are 13.35" diameter.
C6 Z06 rotors are 14.0" diameter.
I am not sure, but I don't think you can use Z51 rotors with 17" wheels. Check your setup. Do you have another 1/2" of clearance?

and if you track your car, how many times have you seen a 1/4" of track turd build up on the inside of your rim in various places? or an 1/8" of stick on wts to balance the wheel? Clearence is the big question.

I'd be interested to see how much clearance there is. Your Z06 wheels should have the exact same clearance as the thin spokes, right? It would be very cool to know that C5Z wheels could be used as a track set.

Please post some pics once you have done the swap.
