Borrowing buddy's enclosed trailer setup for VIR, ok to tie down by a-arms?
I'll most liekly be borrowing GBVette's trailer setup for VIR... he trailers his show car w/ it and uses the a-arms... always has. Will this be ok until I can get my own setup w/ those t-hooks?
Thanks,
Brian

A arms are fine. Use the bigger straps in rear if you have different sizes/strengths. I find that criss-crossing in front works well but when done in the rear, there is a sharp edge that may cut the strap. Therefore, I just put left strap to left tie down and right to right in the rear. Make sure to leave car in neutral and apply emergency brake for hauling.

I've been criss-crossing my straps through the wheels (until I get the T-hooks) while keeping the car in gear with emergency brake one. Works fine. I've never used the a-arms. The good news is if you ordered the T-hooks they should arrive before you depart for VIR.

I'd go with wheels - or pick up some t-hooks - they're cheap. I'd be afraid to bend the aluminum a-arms, as they aren't designed to support a load in that direction.

Brian..................I have four brand new T-hooks (I bought 8) that you can use. You sure your truck can pull Gary's enclosed trailer?

I ordered the t-hooks on the advice of those in the forum but I've always used the control arms with no adverse effect to alignment etc. Of course, I don't wratchet it so tight as to pull it out of alignment but never had a problem that way. Looking forward to trying the t-hooks though. Added benefit of t-hooks appears to be that I will be able to hook straps near edge of car and not have to wrangle all the way under car when inside enclosed trailer.

With the T Hooks you can pull the car tight enough (without crossing the straps) to keep it from moving forward/backward/sideways. I have been towing my C5s this way since 97 and the only thing they do is wear 4 little bare spots on the trailer floor where the tires sit.

Awesome... I'll buy those off of you. I'm borrowing Gary's whole rig... suburban w/ the 454 and trailer. The whole setup is for sale and taking it to VIR will get it exposure.

There is some degree of rocking back and forth during hauling. The tranny gears are not being constantly lubed as in normal operation and the same little contact point on the gears are being loaded/unloaded and then to the other side of the teeth over and over and .......
Abnormal wear is bound to take place. And there are the bearings......
As with most things, I am sure there are other considerations for not doing it. If it is not normal operation of a mechanical item, don't do it!

I've tied down allot of cars and the control arms are very strong. I also leave it in gear, when I tighten the straps though the car is in nuetral with no parking brake. Once the car is tightened down I throw it in gear, it is not going to move if it straped down right. You leave it in gear just in case though. Also I don't use the park brake at all (its not there). Good luck, you will be fine by straping to your control arms, just do not tie around the sway bar or spring. Also you will want to cross your straps, this will help keep the car stable while in transit.

^ Thanks... when you say through the wheels... like wrapped around one spoke... or through the back of the wheel through a spoke then around the tire as a whole?
