Default Wheels and tires for Track days

I need suggestion for light, strong and true wheels for my track days. Looks mean nothing but light, strong and true rule the day.

I will probiliy go with Hoosiers but I am open for suggestions.

As far as wheels go I am completely open for suggestions.

So let me have it.

good question, as I am mulling over the same exact thing.

What I have decided to do is pick up a second set of OEM Z06 wheels for track days.

I have also decided to run the Kumho V710's in sizes that will be wider than stock, but still match the front to back diameter stagger difference of a stock setup (since that's what I am aligned for). 315/35-18 rear and 275/40-17 front.

does that sound reasonable? I will be using that setup for both auto-x and lapping days...

The speedline C5 Z06 wheels (17x9.5 front and 18x10.5 rears) are the best bet.

They are (relatively) inexpensive, light and pretty tough. You can pick up a set for somewhere around $600 if you aren't real picky, or less if they are scuffed up "track wheels". You can do a search, but the fronts I recall were about 19 pounds and the rears are around 21.

There is nothing out there that is anywhere near as light for even 3-4 time the price...

Might also check out some old C4 wheels. The GS model had 17x9.5 front and 17x11 rear. That allows you to run the same diameter tires all the way round. Hoosier also makes a superb combination for this wheel fit: 295s front and 315s rear. Lastly, smaller rear wheels in back is a little faster.

I have an interest in this subject since I eventually plan to have just a set of track wheels and tires.

In addition to those mentioned above, some people run rear Z06 rims all the way around (18 X 10.5 inches). The problem with the 17s in the front for some is that they do not fit those cars with 14 inch rotors.
I believe you can buy these for $200/piece new from House of Wheels.

Then there is always CCWs. A lot more pricey, but a lot of people are using them. Both 17 and 18.

FWIW, I have heard that the best set-up is to run 18s in the front and 17s in the back. The 18s allow lower profile tire to be run so steering response is faster, while 17s in rear allow more squatting for weight transfer when you accelerate.

Hope that helps.

I don't know what's best for your C6 Z06, but I have a C5 Z06 and I use the 18x10.5 C5 Z06 wheels all around with 710's(at the track). I have 14" rotors front and rear so I can't use the older 17x11 rear wheels, other wise I probably would. This is all based on my cheapness, since obviously there are better wheel choices that cost more.

As mentioned above, you can get the C5 Z06 rears pretty cheap and have a decent selection of tires available that will fit that rim.

For a C6 it's hard to pass on the CCWs. They're built with the proper offset/backspacing for the car and your C6Z can fit 18x11+18x13 if I remember right... expensive, yes, but quality and a proper fit. And the Corsairs will clear all kinds of big brake set ups... ghoffman is running the huge PFC zr33 calipers!

I'm sure other vendors can build you wheels to fit, too. Fikse, iForge, etc...

I happen to have a set of OEM Z06 speedlines with V710s with 14 heat cycles on them.

The wheels have some curb rash, and should be considered TRACK wheels.

$750 + Ship Takes it all.
$550 + Ship takes just the wheels (includes separation costs ).

PM me for pics if interested.

**** Just realized we're talking about a C6Z - sorry, I guess the OP would not be interested ****

I just tried some c4 zr1 (1992) fronts on my 08 z51 and found they clear the calipers with about 1/8 inch to spare. They are 17x9.5 I think and it would be necessary to put the weights on the outside of the rim. I think I will try them at all four corners in the same size so I can rotate and hopefully find more less expensive tire options. Does anyone know if not having tire pressure sensors will cause me any grief?

I have a 2 sets of Fikse that I am unloading for a grand (each set). Check them out on the for-sale board. These are awesome racing wheels!! Incredibly light and forged centers, so really strong. And can be rebuilt if you ding one real bad. Check around you'll find Fikse's are the best, but usually expensive....unless you run into a great deal like this one!! Take my depreciation and use it to your advantage.
