It sometimes looks similar:

Hamilton - Friday practice, 2007 USGP, having a "moment"

Not quite as much of course.. but out there a little.

And another one...

Jon
(who admits, ok it isn't a slick-tire-screaming-out-of-control machine of the 80s, but the moments are there)

Yes.. I thought about putting that.. which is why I said it could look similar.. That's one of the ones I am sad I never got to see. ("discovered" racing in 1984 while doing a book report.. so I wasn't really aware of the who and the what of series and people..)

Nice pictures. I was lucky enough to get to see him in an Atlantic car.

It will be more like that next year when they run common ECU's and ban traction control again.

Sad to say, but I doubt it.

It might look a litle more like it, but the modern downforce just doesn't allow those kinds of slip angles, and well.. drivers don't drive like that anymore. (hell.. they didn't really drive like that then, other than him.)

Sideways = slow (unless you're on dirt) so we still won't see it. (IndyCars/Champ cars don't get driven like that even, and they don't have near the aero that the F1 cars will still have.

Anyone have the pic of Gilles heading back to the pits after puncturing the left rear? He never backed off, car WAY sideways, inside bead of the tire against the outside lip of the wheel. THAT was car control and a drive worthy of the title Hero. /:\

I thought the Pic was of Lauda, but others than Villeneuve DID in fact drive like that. In fact, Ronnie Petersen drove WAY wilder than that (and you can ask LG for confirmation).

The photo is most definitely Gilles Villenueve in 1980. I remember Long Beach 1978, which was his fourth or fifth Grand Prix and he shot into the lead and led it convincingly until he banged wheels lapping Reggazoni. Lauda drove the Brabham Alfa V12 that year. Ronnie Peterson had fabulous car control as well. In those days, we would stand directly behind the concrete barriers just a couple of feet away from the sliding F1 cars. The Matra Ligiers sounded the best and here is Gilles at Zandvort on three wheels:

Here's Gilles at Dijon with Arnoux. hehehe......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl2tI...elated&search=

Opposite lock IS sometimes fast (i.e. RAFTRACER). Depends on grip levels and power and downforce and reaction times.

Ronnie Peterson was super quick...shame we didn't get to see more of him

Ferrari won the title in 1979 with Schecter, so they ran car numbers 1 and 2 the following year. Prior to that, he ran number 12. I never get tired of watching the last two laps of that race!

My personal favorite was the 1979 312T4, but the shot below and in the OP is a Ferrari 312T5, from 1980
