Default Grassroots Motorsports 2007 challenge - Vette results

I belive aaron quinne (sp?) posted he was driving the 86 Vette. Looks like they are doing very well. A late day phone call from my brother who attended spoke highly of the vette. For those who have not heard, it has a snowmobile engine in the passenger seat that was used in the autocross to suck the vette to the ground. Rumor has it this was between 800 and 1000 pounds of downforce. The description I got was it blew a steady stream of dirt and gravel up from the passenger seat 10 - 20 feet in the air like a locomotive. Under the hood is a ls-1 with twin turbos... very cool

Results from the autocross and concours are posted below.

What a great event, where else could you get the report from a spectator about how they were walking through the pits and were asked you know anything about aligning a car? Great can you help me..

Not me buddy! That would be Danny Popp for the GRM shootout. I am running the Kit car shootout in St. Louis next week.

Danny kicked A$$ in that event with the 86 vette.

I was skeptical too. Danny said the team had a couple inch thick binder chocked full of records and 1 guy assigned to keep track of everything.

I'd like to see a summary.

Well it doesn't have a ls1 but it does have two turbos. It has the stock motor in the car with two junkyard turbos. I believe that they are from different type of cars. The guys made everything for the car with the machine tools at their work. (P&G)

The car was a rolled over in a crash before the guys bought it. It has some serious man hours in labor to make it what it is right now.

I am sure Danny will post the "rest of the story" later tonoight or tomorrow when he gets back home.

I was one of the pro drivers there & had a chance to drive some crazy cars, but the Vette took the cake...

The car was a sight to behold w/ its unique twin turbo plumbing & military tank fan used to produce suction. The plume of gravel it produced was unreal!

Danny did a great job of navigating the beast (I'm glad I didn't have to drive it!), but said it was abt 2 secs slower that it should have been due to some issues they experienced...

There are pics of the car at grassrootsmotorsports.com go to the 2007 challenge page and you'll see it. For those that don't know how the rules work, It was a roll over bought for less than $2k, allowed to sell off parts down to $0 and starts from there. Two volvo turbos with adapter plates on upside down factory manifolds and it retains the L98. When you see the pics, you can see where they started and where they ended up. They won the "concours" portion of the event as well. The dragrace was rained out..meaning they won by a landslide.

Here is an explanation for the "sucker-vette" fans out there....a very interesting video on youtube of the interview with the chief "loon" (engineer, Cliff...brilliant) and a video of the winning first run which should entertain you......The competitors were very lucky in the fact that the first run was the only one really made (issues with car every run after...wierd shiet....more on that later). The car was easily 2 seconds faster than it went on the first run with cold messed-up front tires and vacuuming the course for the other competitors (we thought we would try to help the others compete )....Watch the video, you'll understand. It was "raining rocks"...........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QBkb...elated&search=

I'll write all about it soon.....................

That was a great interview! The owner was well spoken and detailed enough that I felt as if I were there. He's a good p.r. guy, even in the most un-rehearsed format!

I didn't realize Danny was involved. I've met Danny; he did an alignment/corner weight on my car. If he was involved I'm sure everything was on the level (pun intended).

The pictures and videos say it better than I ever could. We're prepping the "official" press releases and you'll be seeing those and some more photos soon.

Besides the incredibly fast Vette, the highlight of the weekend for me was the incredibly good nature of all the competitors who put up with some insanely bad weather which forced us to miss the drags and still managed to have a good time.

We're actually putting together a structure that will allow competitors to submit official 1/4 mile timeslips dated between certain upcoming dates so we can at least play some educated "what if" games. More details on this soon as well.

Again. Thanks to everyone who participated and supported the event on the web.

EDIT: Actually, I just heard from our marketing guy and he's having trouble registering, so I'm posting this in his stead. It's the link to our official page on the event:

Way cool! Now that's ingenuity.

Maybe they could help their budget for next year's competition by renting the "sucker-vette" out as a street sweeper. We could sure use its services on some of our autocross courses!

Wonder if I could do that in E-modified?

Great job on the cheap design.
