Garage cabinets???????????
Any recommendations? I was looking for 3-4 feet wide no deeper than 18" and less than 7' high. Was going to look in Sears tonight. I did look in Graingers but hate to buy something like this I can't see or feel. Thanks,

Lista is pretty high-end, but they seem to have just about every storage solution you could ask for.

Have you looked at the Black and Decker Spacerite stuff at Lowes? Looks like a decent, medium duty/price setup. I think I'm just going to build 2x4 work space in my new garage and in my trailer. I don't really need doors, just storage and a work top.

Thanks John for starting this thread. I am looking at new houses, well the wife is looking at houses. And I am looking at garages, and I have a ton of different ideas now.

You might (or might not!) want to look at:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/
This is basically a forum about garages and tools. Things like storage cabinets, lifts, compressors, flooring, etc are covered.

If you're looking for a medium priced cabinet set you can check out in person look at Gladiator cabinets at Lowes. They are all steel construction, full length hinges along the doors, very heavy duty compared to other hardware store type cabinets. I'd love to have Lista or similar but you're talking 5 times the price.

John,
Here are the cabinets I bought and installed last month:
http://shopping.msn.com/results/gara...rand:Ulti-Mate
Sears sells them for about half price of what the link shows. I waited for a 30% off sale.
They work for me.
I'll post a pic if you want.

John - have you looked at Harbor Freight - is there an outlet near you?
One of the gals at the office said her husband liked the U.S. General cabinets they saw at Harbor Freight. He's into bikes...motorcycles.
Another one said her hubby liked the wheeled cabinets at Sam's Club.
He runs a 7.40s bracket rail.
Both no nonsense guys that like function and value.

World War II was neater than my garage right now I have tools & parts for cars and trucks, Masonry tools (cut off saws, drills, chopping guns) and a ton of crap here. My yard is a 45 minute drive so if I need anything it is a PITA. Starting to think I need a warehouse. Then all the racing crap and gear.
I was looking at Graingers stuff like this http://www.tennsco.com/pdf/storcabs.pdf
I was going to get three 36" x 18" x 72" I think.
I put in a slop sink and some FRP panels up on one wall.
Shelves look like a mess with stuff piled on them.
I have no idea how many items I have in duplicate because I can't find them. I have no patience so I run to the hardware store, auto place or where ever and buy more Now I bought a boat which introduced more crap to store.
Not known as a neat freak so this just compounds the problem. Also I always like to have things on hand like oil, filters, and parts for all the mechanical crap I have so it builds up.
Thanks or all the advice. By the weekend I need to have or at least order something to start to organize

building &/or buying storage.
This helps you decide what kind of storage you need - no sense in
buying cabinets with shallow, short drawers best suited for measuring
instruments like outside calipers and depth mics if you have long,
tall objects like hammer drills to place in them. It is also an
opportunity to dump the obsolete stuff and combine the duplicates.
Get a bunch of cardboard boxes and find some temporary overflow
storage space where you can marshall everything. Then start
sorting and discarding.
Also, order some books for ideas about how other people have solved
their garage issues. As you get a sense of what you need to find a
place for, the books will provide suggestions that might work for
your particular circumstances. If you are interested, I have some
recommendations based on books I've found to be useful or puffery.
Also, walk through the chain stores for ideas. Home Depot and others
pack a surprising selection of items into a compact area in the fastener
section.
I still remember a little hobby shop where I first saw overhead door
tracking used for hanging several 4 x 8 pegboard partions. Each partion
had hundreds of little bags hanging on hooks, slide the first partion over
four feet and there is the next in full view.
Drill press? Compressor? Shop Vac? Mower? Pressure washer? Hoist? Where
is it all going to go? With a little planning at the beginning, the results at
the end are more satisfying.

If you want a cabinet type storage with doors try a used office furniture store.http://www.ofonj.com/listodetail.asp?id=20
If you want an open type storage try a used store fixture store.http://www.aceshelf.com/steel-shelving.htm
You might get lucky and find a store close to you that has both. I got both the cabinet and shelving units from a used store fixture store in Charlotte several years ago.The cost was a lot less then Home Depot and Lowes. The shelf placement on both the cabinet and shelving unit are adjustable.
I can email you some pictures of what I have if you want.

I've been considering the Clostetmaid stuff sold at Home Depot.
Has anyone bought this stuff? the only thing I'm not crazy about with it is that the back panels aren't of the same construction as the side panels are.

I was going to pull the trigger but now I have to decide if I can open the doors with the car in the garage.

HA HA yeah something minor like not being able to open the doors or having them knock into each other might be a problem
This may not be all that useful, but the garage at out house is not very roomy either. The house is a ranch and the 3 car garage is on the one end of the basement that is exposed, so there is little space both to the sides and towards the ceiling.
I believe I'm the one that got all the storage stuff for the house, so you're not alone slob-wise The one stall barely fits a 4 door sedan so there's not a lot of room in the garage itself for storage. I put in a couple of small tables and open shelves out there.
What was done to the house (and don't laugh too much ) was when we realized we didn't have enough storage for all the cars and stuff was that I (finally) found a builder who would knock out some walls in the rest of the basement (the floor above is on trusses so there are none of those poles in the basement). So what we ended up with was this additional storage area that runs the length of the house (the house is like 2000 sq ft). So yeah we have an addtional 2 cars and 3 motorcycles, etc under us at all times (I think I called it a birthday gift for the husband too)
OK I'm getting back on topic here! So the remaider of the space was supposed to be sort of a rec area, but of course what it ended up becoming was car bits land. So I ended up getting a bunch of open shelves so items could be stacked and sorted by vehicle, etc. It looks almost like a parts store or something. Attach a Sharpie marker to a string too so you can mark the boxes as you stack them (by vehicle/purchase date, etc) or even the parts themselves (like rotors with event dates or sessions for example).
Personally I don't think the open shelves are as pleasing as cabinets with doors, but do seem to make it easier to "see at a glance" what you have.
Watch how some items are assembled too--as a supporter/lover of unassembled furniture I found some funky designs out there. Also maybe consider what the shelves or whatever are made of if you may be storing leaky things on them.
Good luck uncrapifying! (I'll do it but I hate it--I'd rather just put the furniture together)
