C5 in T1
Are those days over? I note that two national champions have their C5s for sale (one sold). One at least is moving on to the 08C6. I'm real interested in T1, and setting up for it is a couple years away. I love the C5Z, but if the new C6 with more power is allowed in class, that might change things. What's the word?

From what I've seen with SCCA there is NO chance of that happening! Not that I don't think it's a good idea, but my impression is that they do not care how much you have invested or, better yet, how practical an idea/change would be, the odds of it being approved are quite slim.

I was trying to ask Chris Ingle about this in his new car thread, but never got a straight answer. My guess is that you'll have to jump up to the C6 with the LS3 if you want a chance to win a championship.

It all depends if the SCCA decides to help out the C5 which seems unlikely since GM wants to see the new model win, not the old one.
Best thing to do is get a much track time as you can on as many different tracks as you can and buy an already prepared version of whatever car the SCCA is favoring at the time (currently C6, last year Viper) when you are ready to take the plunge.

Safety Car
Just looking at things from the outside with a common sense point of view, I think the new C6 with 430 hp prepped for T1 will be vastly superior to the C5 (.5 liters more means more torque under the curve as well.) Couple that with the fact, that the top guys are all great drivers, who were winning in some cases by fractions of a second...I think the C6 is a no brainer if you have the resources, which the top guys certainly do. Some may be keeping quiet, as they don't want to see the values of their T1 c5's fall...I would pick one up, but not for T1, rather for nasa ST2...good for us DE want to be racer guys!

In short, I think the C5 Z06 will be competitive for years to come. Despite the fact that I bought a C6, 80% of the field is still in C5s so we simply can't afford to turn that many cars into dinosaurs. I've already started a letter to the CRB suggesting to put back the 50 lbs they took off the C6s as well as reduce the weight of the C5 another 40 lbs. I've actually tried to get that number reduced twice last year with no luck. Maybe now, they'll listen to me. I've suggested allowing the C5 cars to remove the pass seat and Ebrakes and reduce the weight from 3280 to 3240 or 3230. If the C6 weighs 3330 and the LS3 cars weigh 3380 (or more), I think we'll be back closer. I've even proposed dropping the Viper 50 lbs too...just to be fair to everyone. I brought this issue up at the comp board meeting/tent at the runoffs and noted how my suggestions were basically ignored. We'll see.
My post on the sccaforums.com also explains my side of things: http://sccaforums.com/forums/thread/268940.aspx

The C5 is not done in T1, it is still the backbone of the class. The Ls2 C6 and Ls6 C5 are very equal. Age is the only problem with older C5 T1 cars.
The wrench in the works will be the Ls3 C6, but i think and hope SCCA will handle that the right way, maybe weight, maybe a plate, maybe a little of both...

I do not know everything but I do know THAT and every driver I have talked to that does not drive a C6 shares that opinion. I am also, unlike you, completely unbiased. My main reason for joining T1 was to run the June Sprints and since that has lost its appeal (terrible luck at that event) I have no plans for running T1 in the near future. Therefore I really do not care what the SCCA does to T1 but I do think that you claiming that no one else had a chance to win the Run-Offs purely because you are that much more talented than everyone else is an insult to the C5 (and Viper) drivers.

I never said i was superior to everyone else.
But results do speak, especially from earlier this year.
I would have done the same thing in either a C5 or C6. One the factor that made me choose a C6 is that everything was fresh, and I never picked up a wrench all week to replace old parts.

Scott,
I predict the C5 will get some "help" with an increase in the C6's minimum weight. Hopefully the SCCA will acknowledge what the true weights on the C6s are so any changes will have the desired impact.
I don't think the C5 is dead in T1, not for a long time.
