Default Front wheel bearing removal?

The service manual shows removal of spindle to replace wheel bearing/hub assembly on the C5. Is there any reason to remove it. Why not just take the 3 mounting bolts out with the spindle in place.

Am I missing something?

You can do the fronts without removing the spindle. At least I did.

Be sure and get the 3 bolts tight when you reinstall them. Loc-tite them when you put them back in. I marked mine so I can easily tell if they loosen up, again.

you have to pop the lower ball joint. the nut that holds the lower ball joint covers the lower wheel bearing bolt.

you dont have to remove the spindle

The bottom ball joint is in the way of the bottom torx head bolt. At a minimum you must remove the tie rod end and the lower ball joint to get the hub/bearing off the spindle. It is really an easier job if you go ahead and take the spindle off completely. Our cars are new enough that years of corrosion do not prohibit easy removal of the ball joints. Get or borrow the proper Kent Moore tool to make it that much easier and not tear the rubber boots. It's an expensive booger at $215.00 but worth every penny if you tear a boot or two. Torquing the new hub/bearing on properly is VERY IMPORTANT ! It is easiest to do it with the assembly in a vise.

I should have searched first. It seems the only thing in the way of the bottom Torx head bolt is the nut on the lower ball joint. got to support things after removing... just in case....

I have play in bearing and want to just check torque on those bolts first. If they are tight, then it's off to Autozone for a Timken replacement.

Thanks.

I never remove the spindle. Just take apart the lower ball joint to gain access to the lower Torx bolt.

Loctite and torque the 3 Torx bolts and you are ready to rumble.

Your T-55 torx head "socket" should be a one-piece socket. The torque requirement is pretty high. If you use the two piece socket you'll be making another trip to the auto parts store for the one piece.

I was skeptical about skipping steps, but all worked out well. The above quote is accurate.
