Default My first auto x story

10 years ago I did my first auto x. I was Skeptical as my car was prestine & I was a waxer back then.

This little volks wagon comes around a 90 degree corner, catches a front tire on a rut, and flips right over

It was fully prepped, so the guy walked away. But wow, what an eye opener for my 1st event.

I have now heard (never witnessed) of two cars rolling over during an autox. The other was a stock sprung, high cg boxcar with Hoosiers running through a slalom. He got fast enough that he got some kind of cycle going (kinda like a resonant frequency) between the suspension travel and the transitions between the slaloms, and wouldn't back out of it and abort the run. BTW, when the car rolled over they called a DNF since he missed the exit gate.

I've also heard of cars whacking curbs, light poles, etc. So, autox isn't a completely car-safe event, but you've got to admit it's about as safe as a competitive event can be.

Have a good one,
Mike

Shows what grippy tires and the extra G-loading they can produce.

Which club was this?

Who layout the course with a rut in the middle of a corner?

My club quite running at Bose after a second car clipped a curb.

The pic was from Oscoda last year if that is what you are asking:

Thanks for the info, but I knew about the Mustang, hence the post.

I meant the VW

It was an SCCA event, in a big parking lot. The 90 degree corner wasn't a problem for anyone, except the 1 VW, so after it flipped, they needed to redesign the corner mid-way through the day. People were freaking out about scores, and the proper way to handle such a problem.

I don't remember what happened, but I know they shifted a few cones around, and it had to affect the times. I didn't care as it was my first event in the novice class. I was just getting my feet wet, so I didn't pay attention to winning times. But I know people were upset about it.

I rode with Danny Popp last Saturday for my first auto-x. Danny is an amazing driver--you swear the tires never make contact with the ground
