Schumacher takes the wheel in wild taxi ride
Police in Coburg are to investigate whether seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher broke the law after he got behind the wheel of a taxi last week so his family were on time for a flight.
The retired Formula One ace reportedly took the wheel of the taxi after he and his family had run late shopping for a puppy.
The German star was said to have "taken the corners at full-throttle and overtaken in unbelievable places," according to the cab driver.
Schumacher paid the 60 euros ($100) for the journey and even gave the cab driver a 100 euro tip to show his appreciation.
But the race to the airport has not gone down well with local police.
According to a report in German tabloid Bild, police will cross-examine Mr Yilmaz as a possible witness and Schumacher could face a fine.
But things may be even worse for the taxi driver, who is also set to face consequences.
Schumacher's manager Willi Weber was amazed Mr Yilmaz and his client could find themselves in trouble over the incident.
"To punish this man would be ridiculous. He very kindly helped Michael and we wish all taxi drivers were so understanding."

Terrible judgement on his part, what if he had injured someone?
It is one thing to be in your own car on a closed circuit with several
fellow FIA Super License holders. It is quite another to be out mixing
it up in an unknown, rebuilt, write-off-***-taxi cab carrying passengers
on public streets while dicing with motorists of plebian skill who are
just as likely to be texting as they are likely to be concentrating on
driving.
Like everyone else, even Michael Schumacher - rather, ESPECIALLY
Michael Schumacher should save it for the track.

What I don't get is why Schumacher didn't have a personal driver instead of a taxi and why he's flying commercial. If he had his own plane, like he should with the money he makes, wouldn't he not have to worry about catching a plane on time?

Mr. S runs neck and neck with Tiger for greatest annual income; approximately 80-85 million USD per year. Who will be the first sport star to make 1 billion? It is one of these two.
Fun fact: Mr. S likes Harley VRODS. He has about 2 dozen at various houses so he and his friends can ride. He bought twelve at one time.

We discussed this at work, (German company), He takes the taxis to minimize attention. Here is the article from last week;

My guess is that Michael Schumacher has more skill and judgment than 99.99999999 percent of all car drivers.
Schumacher can pass me anytime, anywhere, and it wouldn't bother me one bit. I'd be glad to get out of his way. I would hope that I would be aware enough to get out of his way before he had to slow or take evasive action to avoid me.

I heard about that. He likes the US because he's not nearly as well known and isn't hounded like he is in other parts of the world. Plus, the US has wide open spaces. Our states are the size of countries in Europe.

Of course everyone in Germany who thinks they are a good driver can now buy cab lookalikes and drive anyway they choose! Only in race prepped cabs obviously.

Would you feel safer being passed on the road by one of those plebian skilled motorists who was texting?

Having the best driving skill in a situation like this, with amateurs, does not guarantee that you would not be/get gathered up. I submit it makes it more likely.
Keep it on the track (I've heard that somewhere before)

Really, nothing new.
F1 drivers have been racing to and from airports all the way back to the 1950's.
Gilles Villeneuve used parked cars as curbs (bank shots)....routinely.
They drove "hired" cars and beat the snot out of them.
Frank Williams is paralyzed due to over-driving a rental - on his way back from a test session. He rolled it into a ditch.
Senna and Fangio were both notorious their "road car" antics.
FWIW.
