Default Recomend a Street tire for autocross

My local SCCA is considering offering an unlimited mod street tire class. This could be fun. I currently own two sets of CCWs, both are 17x11/17x12. And stock 2000 c5 wheels.

Looking for a tire that offers the best grip and I think they are talking about a 180 limit on the tread rating. Any ideas?

I was thinking that same tire. Untill I went to their page and discovered the largest 17' tire they make is a 275.

My CCWs are 17x11 and 17x12.

Has anyone tried the Sumitomo HTRZ?

The guy at a reputable tire store said that the goodyear tires offer more traction than the Sumitomo and they last longer. I'm very concerned about buying a set of goodyear tires. I've owned 2 C5 corvettes and they both came with Goodyear tires. They sucked. Like terrible. My MXs would out perform them in everything (and at a lower price )

I was pretty happy with the BFG KD's. I ran 315/35ZR17 on the rear (17x12 wheels), and 275/40ZR17 on the front (17x10 wheels). They probably aren't as sticky as the Falken Azenis 615's.

I don't see the 17" tires on the BFG web site but TireRack seems to have them.

What did the car feel like on the street under normal driving conditions?

IE: When I drive to an autocross on my 710s it is scary. The tires want to grab every line in the road and steer my car that way. The car felt very darty and such.

Did you experience this on the KDs?

Or for that matter, have any of you run HUGE street tires before? What did it feel like?

I used to have a set of the Sumitomo HTRZ-II on the Z06 as a street tire and I thought they sucked. Not sure how similar the tread compound is to the HTR though. It was always breaking the rear loose when I would try to get on the gas with any kind of authority which is something the stock tires never had a problem with.

Wow, now that is something htat I did not expect to hear. Thanks. I was under the impression that the HTRZ was a solid performer in the dry.

Good to know.

I recently put on a set of Nitto 555R2 Extreme (road race) DOT approved competition tires on my '03Z. I can't believe the level of grip these tires offer. It really is amazing. Treadwear rating is 100, but I hear that some guys are getting pretty good mileage with them. My first track even with these tires are at the end of this month at Roebling. If you want a safe high speed tire with outstanding grip, I highly recommend the Nitto 555R2 Road Race tire. I bought mine from forum vendor Tomzwheels as he had the best prices.

Default street tires for ax

You could buy 2 more 18x10.5 factory wheels and ron 315x18 falkens on all 4 corners. New wheels are aboutt 200.00 each. Save the 17's for r-compound tires when you are at the big races.

They did tend to make the car a little darty on the highway. A little more than the stock tires. I do have a little toe out on the front and there are pretty bad roads up here in Michigan. The tires did last me about three years of autocrossing and test and tunes. I think I did a track day or two with them too in that period so they really do last.

Hope this helps.

When I was running the street tires I found the BFG KD's the best tires in OEM size wheels but the Falkens were about 3/10 faster in testing. I was running stock C5 wheels and 245/45/17 275/40/18 BFG's and 255/40/17 275/35/18 Falken's. This was at a test session at 50 second course at Grissom in Indiana if that helps.

Thats what I did:

315 Azenis on Z06 rear wheels on all 4 corners. Best setup IMO for street tires for a Vette.

If memory serves me correct, I tried running stock size 18's up front on my 97 C5 and they rubbed a Lot. Was my car lowered too much? Or are we talking about a smaller diameter tire?

A 275/40R18 is a bit taller than a 315/30R18 (about 1 inch). I've run these tires on my C4 and two different C5's. The C5's had a bit of rub at full lock, but not much. My C4 has tons of clearance, even at the ride height pictured there.
