This makes no sense whatsoever. Most people do not have $2M or $5M liability insurance for their CAR. Some may have a $1M umbrella perhaps, but I am not sure where this is going

I run most often with Professional Auto Sports, a division of ASA Racing. In their un-timed levels my automobile insurance will cover my car while it's on the track (this is rare from what I understand). These are not officially timed on-track sessions but it can (and does) get quite competitive. Many excellent drivers stay in the un-timed levels specifically to maintain their own insurance coverage. Once you move into the 'pro' racing levels, you lose your insurance coverage while you're on the track.
Membership in the organization affords insurance coverage, as follows: "We protect our membership with $5 million in liability insurance. Our insurers are the well known St. Paul Liability Insurance Company and Lloyds of London. We have never had a liability claim, resulting in an excellent rating with our insurers.....Our ASA-Racing Competition License also carries with it an additional $500,000 in on-track accident and medical insurance."
This fall, in addition to Proautosports I plan on joining the Arizona Corvette Racers...they're quite competitive and run time trials. I will lose my own, personal insurance coverage when I run with this group. The Arizona Corvette Racers run mostly under NASA. I'm not sure what, if any, insurance is provided by NASA but I would assume they have some sort of liability coverage. As far as potential damage to the car, I'm prepared to accept the risk myself.
