Run Patched Tires?
My tires seem to act like magnets towards nails, screws, or anything sharp and metal. I'm just wondering if anyone actually runs their patched tires? I'm talking about the stock Z06 F1s and patching small holes that are not through the sidewalls. I'm getting tired of replacing good tires with ones that haven't been touched. I have had no problems with patched tires on the street, but I'm not sure I'd feel completely comfortable using them on the track as well. Unfortunately, stock rear tires seem to be in short supply right now.

I had one MX that I used for several events that was patched with the pull through type. I checked a search on here and many others have used them patched.

From what I remember GY says that you can plug/patch 2 times, but you lose a speed rating for each plug/patch.
That being said I ran my runflats with a single plug/patch at Pocono and WGI without any problems.
I do recommend the plug/patch combo.

So a Y rated tire such as the Eagle F1 SC that has been patched once goes to a W rated tire? If that is the case, I should be alright as I don't think I'll be getting near 168mph. I'll have to call the technician who did the repair to find out exactly what they did, but it makes me fell better knowing others have used patched tires on the track without any issues.

I have have plugged some really large holes... like a 12 mm bolt and then run speeds 100-140 MPH. I run the tire until to cords show and the plug is still there holding air. There is one rare condition when plugs don't work, but I can't remember what it is.
If you damaged the cords with whatever pierced the tire, I can't see how any repair method is superior to another. None will mend a broken cord.
Squeamish? Buy a new tire and send me your old ones.

I just found a piece of a nail in it, so it's pretty small. The tire does have a significant amount of treat left on it as well. I should probably be more concerned about the age of the tire rather than the work that has been done to it. The tires are from the factory that came on the 02 Z06.

Be sure to run those on a hot day--80 or 90 F but definitely above 70 F. This will get some heat into them.
I'm glad everyone says it's ok to run patched. I have a few front F1's that have been professionally repaired with huge patches and these were only for the smallest of nail holes no where close to the sidewalls.

I've patched an run everything, and have never had a plug fail, street or track. I even had a sidewall get sliced on a pickup truck once, and I stuck 3 plugs in it and drove it several more days.
As long as the tire isn't damaged (ie from running flat for a long distance, causing structural damage), the plug/patch should last the life of the tire. I wouldn't suggest running any OVAL/ROVAL tracks however, although I did do it once at Lowes.

Thanks for the input guys!
I have done some autoX events with the repaired tire without any issues, so if there was any major structural damage on it I would have noticed it by now. I was concerned primarily about the higher speeds, but my mind is at ease now.
I do need to replace the old F1s, just need a good excuse to do so. Maybe some R compounds in the future!
