Default Harmonic Damper Operating Temperature

Has anyone taken temperature readings of the inertia ring on the
harmonic damper of an SBC used for track events? What values were
observed and were any measures taken to duct air toward the damper?

Thanks,
Ken R.

Interesting... I've never done any. However, I took the time to install a keyed ATI superdamper when I put my cam in. The part is lightyears better than the stock one and I have absolutely zero blancer wobble. It's a 10% underdrive unit as ATI couldn't achieve their dampening requirements with anything smaller.

As for air flow... DRM showed me a way to cut the shroud out to promote flow through the radiator.

I have about 25 items on my track chart for temp readings, but thats one item not on there and never though much of. Why do you need or would like to know temps there?
I also opened my radiator mount as much as possible. I made wheel well openings that improved cooling for the engine, brakes and wheels too.

A harmonic damper does work. Generally when work is done, heat is a
by-product.

It seems possible that heat might change operating characteristics of
the elastomer ring that joins the inertia ring to the hub of OEM-style
dampers. Maybe heat also influences the operation of other styles
of dampers like the ATI, Fluidampr and TCI designs?

Just curious whether damper temperature has been studied here.

(Regarding the practice of cutting openings in radiator shrouds. Tom
DeWitt's shrouds take this a step further in a way that promises to
help retain effectiveness of the fans at low speed.)

That is why we drive fast!!!

I have zero issues at low speeds. I put over 10k on my car last year with the radiator shroud cut like that, zero increase in temps at idle or in stop/go traffic.

Thanks for the replies. I know several folks here run modified engine
combinations above OEM redlines for extended sessions on track in
warm temperatures (seeing high water and oil temps). I was merely
curious whether any of them had taken notice of the damper?

If someone were to take a moment to check during their outings this
season, it would be interesting to see what values are observed after
lapping sessions, together with info about coolant/oil/ambiant temps.

Harmonic Dampers

Crankshaft failure can be prevented by mounting some form of vibration
damper at the front end of the crankshaft that is capable of absorbing
and dissipating the majority of the vibratory energy. Once absorbed by
the damper the energy is released in the form of heat, making adequate
cooling a necessity. This heat dissipation was visibly essential in Tom
Milner's PTG racing M3 which channeled air from the brake ducts to the
harmonic damper, in order to keep the damper at optimal operating
temperatures.
