[Laguna Seca]da Matta - possible spoiler
Although he eventually withdrew because of apparent nausea,
Christiano da Matta led the field for several laps.
In an interview, he spoke about perhaps eating too much too close to
the start and mentioned effects from the cool suit. He tried to to deal
with the issue, even to the point of losing his lunch in his helmet. IIRC,
he said he felt better for a time after this but then things turned for
the worse causing him to finally decide to pull in.

Can't believe he blamed his cool suit. Bizzare.
Hope he's not sponsored by F.A.S.T.

Did you hear him say it, too?
Although in the OP I didn't express doubt about what I thought I heard
in that part of the interview, I will here. I looked for confirmation in
post-race reports, but other than race stats, I didn't find any on-line
'colour commentary'.
I don't have first-hand experience with body coolers and do not know
what kind of side-effects thay can cause.
Maybe something was lost in translation, a few of his other references
were ESL-flavoured.

I run with a cool shirt, and it is nothing less then awesome. If anything, the cool shirt keeps me from getting sick.
I dunno... maybe he's pretty nervous out there. Hopefully he can sort it out, whatever the issue is.

Thanks, for the confirmation. I just hunted up the following exerpts
and the part about the suit and him NOT having a heat-related illness
left me thinking I must have mis-heard the broadcast.
to describe it gave me the idea that there wasn't much chance that
anybody else was going to be climbing into the cockpit until it had been
hosed out.
Hope that the root of the problem is temporary and not a residual
symptom of his injuries. Seeing him leading in his first event was
exciting ...
Sounds as though Valiente suffered due to lack of a suit. Wasn't aware
that he'd had a problem.

Laguna Seca: GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Grand Am Race Recap
- Da Matta Leads Laps In Return
PaddockTalk

While the No. 99 team failed to lead a race for the first time this
season, da Matta stepped up to carry the GAINSCO team in that stat
category when he led 10 laps just under an hour from the finish. Fading
tires later saw him drop several spots after a restart, but the biggest
setback came when da Matta himself suffered a stomach illness and
pitted late in the race.
"Man, it felt like I had a cat in my stomach," said da Matta, who was
wearing a cool suit for the first time in his career and didn't have a
heat-related illness. "It started feeling bad right when I got in the car
on that very first yellow, but just a little bit, a very little bit. Under
green, it was fine, but with all of the yellows, my stomach just started
feeling worse. It was very strange. I am fine now, but I know we could
have done much better, not just me getting sick, but some of the other
things we did. It's just all part of racing, but for a comeback race, it
went very well. It is important that I could see the performance is
there now and for the future."
Dalziel, Zogaib score Laguna Seca victory

While Pruett and Goossens were on the podium with Dalziel, race
leaders Valiente and da Matta did not fare nearly so well. The extreme
heat of the weekend caused Canadian Valiente to be removed from his
Suntrust Pontiac Dallara with heat exhaustion after the temperature in
the interior of his car reached 147 degrees F. Fortunately, Valiente
responded well to treatment at the track and required no further
medical help. After leading the race, the #98 Pontiac Riley driven by
da Matta and his co driver Jimmy Vasser had to retire on lap 80 due to
mechanical problems.

He needs to schedule a comeback in winter. Quick, someone put him in a V-8 supercar down under!
