racers - boiling your brake fluid questions
whats the best dual usefluid (HPDE and track) to avoid boiling?
also, whats the difference between overheating your pads/rotors vs. boiling the brake fluid (seems like they would be one and the same).. :
thanks!

When you boil the fluid the pedal goes to the floor or becomes spongy. When you overheat the pads you still have a firm pedal, it just does not do anything when you step on it.
Castrol SRF is the best currently available.

Good and cheap combo is:
SS Lines
ATE Blue Fluid
Rock auto special rotors
Race pads (I use and love hawk DTC 70's)
Never had a problem with boiling the fluid, car stops on a dime every time.

I use Castrol SRF. Boiled ATE Super Blue too many times. Check the SRF thread.
If your brake pads look like glazed cake icing, smooth, they are shot.
Just about any time a brake pad is over heated, it will glaze over. Time for new brake pads.
Each case your car just does not stop.
Need to have the brake cooling ducts put in.

Castrol SRF: probably overkill for most, but it is the best. Highest wet boiling point by a mile
Fluid: pedal goes to floor -> car doesn't stop
Pads: pedal stay firm -> car doesn't stop
thanks! [/QUOTE]

Spazegun, isn't it amazing how well the DTC 70's hold up if broken in correctly?

Except I use Carbotech 10s and 8s. Never had a problem even in a 40 minute session at Laguna Seca.

I've used ATE fluid with Wilwood H pads for 5 years and never had a problem with that combination. I now use now BHP's pads, along with their GS610 fluid and that's a great combination.
Over all those thousands of track miles, I've never boiled fluid.

In addition I have cooling air to the brakes (as does most everyone else that has posted to this thread )

I use the same above except for canadian rotors from NAPA. I have managed 79 sec. run at Putnam and 1:11 run at Nashville using this combination during the last sessions of the day with no problems. Using DBA temperature color coded rotors, I have exceeded 1166 degrees with no ill effects. Just bleed the system between each weekend event. A lot of braking issues are blamed on fluid and pad unjustifiably.

Actually, I tried the DIC elapse timer but was not very successful with it while wearing gloves. I have been relegated to using my tag heuer chrono while watching the videos. I doubt that the swiss would be in awe of my technique but since I used to be a government worker, it is close enough....

I use valvoline synthetic from Advance Auto, Autozone and Walmart...
I have never boiled fluid and I have run a few laps here and there. Just bled the brakes and will load the car on the trailer to show southern son how it is done at Road Atlanta on Monday....

Used this for racecar for years...and cheap too. I bleed every weekend event about 1pt of fluid at least 8X/yr
