Default Oil Cooler Hose

Have any of you guys used the Aeroquip blue socketless hose for your oil cooler on a C5? I was wondering if there are any issues with rubbing or chafing where it gets tight going through the crossmember.

Thanks

If sufficient room exists or can be provided, optional spiral wrap for the
purpose of improving chaff resistance is available. I do not see any
examples at Summit but hydraulic supply vendors will carry various
choices such as the ones shown here.

Aeroquip offers a number of protective sleeve products
FC425 - Nylon Abrasion Sleeve
900952 - Plastic Protective Coil Sleeve
900564 - Steel Protective Coil Spring
900705 - Steel Protective Coil Sleeve
Something that may or may not be a consideration for your application
is the bend radius of socketless hose, relative to other choices on the
market. Here is a post from another thread with a comparison between
AQP Socketless and AQP SS Braided (it discusses -8 AN hose, BR for
other sizes will increase/decrease accordingly.)

Aeroquip does not list a lb/ft and I don't have any here so I can
not quantify an opinion that Socketless is lighter.

Aeroquip AQP
  • AER-FCV0820 Socketless Hose, Rubber, Blue, -8 AN, 20 ft. $65.95
    - ID/OD: 0.50"/0.75"
    - min 5.0" bend radius
    - max 250 PSI
    - ?? lbs/ft
    - Temp: -40°F to +300°F (-40°C to +150°C). Air not to exceed
    +250°F (+121°C) and water not to exceed +180°F (+82°C).
    .
  • AER-FCA0820 SS Braided Hose, Braided, SS, -8 AN, 20 ft. $119.95
    - ID/OD: 0.44"/0.65"
    - min 3.5" bend radius
    - max 1000 PSI (750 if used with light weight crimp fittings)
    - 0.17 lbs/ft
    - Temp: Continuous op from -55°F to +300°F (-49°C to +150°C).
Incidently, Aeroquip AQP FC350 has a Nylon outer braid and takes
reusable hose ends. It is lighter, less costly and has a tighter min bend
radius than comparable SS.

Use a steel braided hose
The orange hose is a high temp aero hose for insulation over the braided lines.

When setting up dry or accu sumps, IMHO they should be set up like race cars, steel braided lines only. Less likely to rupture

I have to agree and disagree with Tom a little I've used a lot of SS on racecars. It works best but as it ages, one or two of the little strands break, always in the location where you have to put your hand. I got tired of bleeding.
I've been using the AQ Blue with zero problems. The outer cover is pretty tough. I've had no abrasion problems. If I was going over a crossmember, I'd use the nylon sleeve that Slalom recommends. I've used it before and feel thet it lasts longer than the plastic.

If you're dedicated in your prerace prep like Tom ( many hours before every event), the blue will work well. I've got some at 4+ years.
If you're not that dedicated, go with SS (But you should be that dedicated).

The blue's a little easier to assemble, easier to cut. Should be done with the correct vice jaw covers that hold the fittings.
The SS a little harder to assemble but, if you buy the Koul Tools hose assembly tools, it's much easier.

I like the weight savings of the socketless hose as well as less bleeding. I am very **** about going over every inch of my car before I take it to the track, checking every single critical nut, bolt, fitting, fluid, if it can hurt me, it gets checked. Then I go back and look at all the lessor critical bits.

I fail to recall anyone in motorsport speaking its praises, but Aeroquip's
FC350 splits the difference between the pros/cons stated for the SS
Braided hose and the Socketless hose:
  • Weight is in between SS and Socketless
  • Excellent bend radius
  • Outer nylon braid does not fray & attack hands over time
  • Outer nylon braid does not abrade adjacent surfaces as
    aggressively as SS
  • Inner SS braid offers superior resistance to mishaps, relative
to the inner textile braid in the Socketless
  • Irrelevent here, but it also has a lower operating temperature:
    -55ºF to +300ºF versus -40ºF to +300ºF
I noticed that Earl's offers a product called Pro-Lite 350 which looks
a LOT like Aeroquip's AQP FC350. However, Earl's P-L 350 is more
costly than Earl's SS Braid and it apparently has a textile inner braid
instead of an SS inner braid. It is also only rated to -40ºF.

Up here, FC350 is generally available at most hydraulic supply houses
with whatever trade discount a person is able to negotiate.
