The most current rating is SA2005. Most groups allow the current
rating and the most recent previous rating, which right now is SA2000.
So buying a current helmet, SA2005, should keep you good for close to
ten years. Beware any deals on SA2000 helmets.

SA2000's are now at "give away" prices, wonder why? Don't buy one that will be out of date fairly soon. The SA 2005's will be good for quite a while if you're doing HPDE's. The 2010's haven't even come out yet.

Find a shop where you can try them on before you buy.

M=motorcycle=not fire resistant because you get thrown away from the burning bike and don't need it.

No...SA is Special Application meaning race. That is the Fire resistant helmet. M is motorcycle. Nasa still allows M rated helmets but most groups are getting away from them. Go with SA. You can always use SA on a motorcycle if needed.

SA-rated helmets don't always have a DOT rating sticker. Here in WA an SA helmet without a DOT sticker is not legal for highway motorcycle use.

M-rated helmets typically have the oval DOT sticker on them and on the outside. My Bell Mag-4 has a sticker under the liner that states it has not been approved by the federal DOT and as such is not legal for street/highway use.

I picke dup the SA 2005, and if I remember the rules for SCCA Solo II you can go as old as SA95, so a SA2000 if cheap enough might be worth it for a few years. But I'd suggest checking on what events you plan to race for regulations.

SA helmets go through a multiple acute impact test ( bouncing your head off of the roll cage in a rollover).

M helemts do not go through that test

A 95 could be ussed if, for instance, the build date on it was inside ten years. If you had a 95 built in 99 some may let it through. That's why when they start discounting 05's you may be able to get a steal and be able to use the brain bucket for close to ten years to boot.

This is just what our local club does. I can't speak specifically about national or other local clubs.
